this was super super inspiring to me and I thought it would be a lot of fun to play with. I don’t have Max to try 64videofingers but I spun up something using SuperCollider+mpv. my code is hacky but it works and it is indeed very fun to play:
its also incredibly challenging - especially to find clips that fit in pitch/time. @egon77 I’m now doubly inspired by your set…
by decoupling the clock do you mean that you add a random delay when receiving the trigger? (a delay that is some division of the clock tempo?)

Haha! That is awesome! I’m so glad I was able to inspire you. I need to take your super collider workshops! I was very interested in SC at one point and got the book, but only took it so far.
If you ever do want to dig into my Max patch let me send you the latest one. That version is a definite tangle.
Regarding the decoupling of clock and trigger rhythm, that is really about the modular patch that triggers the clips. I use two four-way switches. One of them has four divisions of the main clock and this is patched to the sequencer with the note information for the video clips. The second four-way switch has a bunch of fun rhythm modules connected to it, like mutable instruments grids, intellijel steppy and just so I have it also a 16th note version of the main clock. This is patched to the actual gate or trigger for the clips regardless of what note the sequencer is currently on. So by playing with these two four-way switches a bunch of fun variations can be had.
Regarding finding the right clips, that’s only from playing. When I first made the app I initially thought of it as a video layering app, but had the same experience, that when I combined clips things got a little muddy or cacophonous. When I eventually connected the modular to it I actually just stuck to one layer of video plus modular synth accompaniment. But through experimentation I eventually started figuring out the pitch of the first few seconds of each video clip. So I could organize them by pitch, randomize them and also kind of play them like a keyboard. For my flash crash set, I already had a bunch of clips labeled so I just collected a bunch together that were hitting the note A.
The other thing to think about is tempo, since most of the clips already have a tempo associated with them it’s usually best to try to match the tempo but it can also be fun to find odd complimentary tempos.
