A subtlety: I have a pinned tab open to the new forum on two machines, home and work. I’m logged in on both machines. I get up in the morning, check my home computer, and see “3 new or updated topics. Click to show.” I click, look at the new posts, go to work. On my work machine, I see “3 new or updated topics. Click to show.” I click and see the same three threads as before. It looks like the client doesn’t notify the server that I’ve seen those posts, or (more likely?) that the server doesn’t notify the other client. I don’t see any client preferences for this behavior – is there any setting on the server for this?

Thanks, tehn.

i’ll check it out. i haven’t been testing with simultaneous logins yet. thanks for the heads up.

Am not sure if anyone else noticed this, but the SoundCloud embeds cause some real problems loading. So much so tgat a page with a few SounCloud embeds will not work at all, but gets into a choke of automatic reloads and freezes…

Safari on iPad with current IOS

Testing, testing.

Any external dependency (YouTube, SoundCloud, Facebook like button) causes additional requests that can significantly delay the initial page load time. Discourse should display the intial content fairly quickly though, as it is rendered on the server as well. I’m from Europe and the roundtrip takes 70ms. Compounded with render blocking JS and CSS, it can be noticable.

soundcloud and youtube embedded in certain threads cause crashing in chrome

might not be your fault tho

is it possible to open up very late editing of the first post? looks like older posts have no edit button anymore.

the forum designers must’ve envisioned the forum as a living thing, rather than a sloppy document system-- and i tend to agree with them.

what thread to you want to edit? i can do an override possibly. though it may be better to start a new thread.

I noticed that as well.
In the mammooth “experimental music notation resources” thread I was trying to fix a mis-credited image that was posted months earlier, and could not do it.

in that perspective, living thing +1

Is it just me, or is the forum reeeaaaalllly slow today?..

anybody experienced

not just you

i have subpar web provider tho
my initial instinct was to blame them

let me know if it persists. i can throw more $$ at the server.

It was a bit slow when @laborcamp posted, but it seems to have cleared up now.

If you didn’t restart the server or anything like that, then I suspect it was some kind of resource contention at your host. The network is often the most likely culprit.

I don’t know how you’re hosting this site, but for smaller instances, in my own experience, I’ve found Digital Ocean to be more reliable, better performing, and less expensive than AWS. Not that anybody ever wants to move hosts unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Looking back at this thread, it seems like there’s some kind of slowness once or twice a year. Seems pretty minor to me.

It seems a bit better now.
But over all, I think it’s been getting a little slower over time. Incrementally.

Testing… I think YOU ARE THE ONE who is getting a little slower over time! Incrementally!
(oops, i must not return to my old naughty ways, sorry bout that, couldn’t resist… now lessee how long this took to post…)

hmm… that wasn’t so bad. i think i’d actually like it to go slower even, so that i can feel the server meditating over the potential of every one of my thoughts and contemplate its own existence within the microcosm of each word; i prefer my servers to be more Zen

Oh, there you are!

Been missing that sense of humor!

it does seem fast now, but earlier today it was quite bad.

hahahaha, revealed!!!

can the forum be upgraded to the latest version of discourse? version 1.5 was released at the beginning of april, and it promises several very necessary, significant speedups.

in particular, lines is barely usable on mobile browsers even with a fast, modern multicore phone. whether signed in or not, the stack takes several seconds just to display the front page content.

Always used it on my phone and had absolutely no problem. It’s the fastest and the best smartphone browser interface I’ve ever used for a forum so this is very strange to read! All the pages display in 1 second, it adapts in responsive with no issue whatsoever. I can’t actually think of a single problem I’ve ever had with it and that’s VERY rare for me to say that regarding to web interfaces. Anyhow, thought I should mention it.
