some thoughts on this one:

Wolf Eyes it not known as a Jazz or Free Jazz band at all, since they are in my opinion mainly a noise unit, but lately they have been delving in to this “psycho jazz” direction. could this be called free jazz? I think they have some frames on which they play, but i think there is a great emphasis on the experimentation in the live space ( or so i think atleast) sounds awesome nevertheless, but is it free jazz? avantgarde jazz? jazz at all? don’t know, electric jazz???

I’m not sure mine is an answer your questions/fulfill your needs, but Richard Teitelbaum has recorded some improvised stuff with Braxton, Musica Elettronica Viva, Steve Lacy…
Also James Fei who is primarily a saxophone player also plays synthesisers.
If you mean a full electronic free jazz band I don’t know anything like that but I might be wrong.

This Underwater Airport track always felt like ecstatic free jazz vibes to me… Of course, all of our “live” music is completely improvised, so it partakes to some degree in the qualities of Free Jazz. At least I hope it does…

Supersilent’s album “1-3” is electric or even electronic free jazz.

Hemophiliac’s music (Zorn / Patton / Ikue Mori) is electric free jazz.

Etc.

evan parker electro-acoustic ensemble has a number of releases on the ECM label. I haven’t delved too deeply, but i recall playing this album for friends (in the car) on a road trip. it’s fairly abstract. not sure that it qualifies as free jazz.

supersilent (mentioned above) is well worth checking out as well. some of eli keszler’s solo work sounds like free jazz… some of it (find it on bandcamp) is awesome -sounding.

also, this duo album features thomas lehn playing a EMS synthi. it sounds fantastic:

i don’t think there should be any restrictions (realistically) on what sorts of tools people use to make free jazz. or any type of music, for that matter

The word jazz plays all sorts of tricks in people’s minds. There are tons of improvisers who use electronics, not sure how many of them like the word jazz.

I love the suggestions above. Here’s a few more.

Obvious maybe? I dunno, I don’t actually listen to a whole lot of jazz, much less free jazz, but I keep a little in my cupboard for special occasions.

First thing that jumps in to my mind is the Love, Cry, Want recording from '72 if you are thinking ‘free jazz’ in the sense of more 70s style ensemble with big freak out fire music parts. Also from around then but different pace/vibe would be the Joe McPhee John Snyder recording Kye released, Don Cherry and Jon Appleton’s Human Music… I am sure there are lots of othere here I am just totally unaware of. For more contemporary stuff too I am sure there is loads out there.

One of my first and still favorite free jazz records is Conference of the Birds by Dave Holland. Braxton is on it so it gets some immediate free cred but isn’t as out as Ayler, Brotzman etc

the thread keeps on going, but now I need some help!

I have been making my Masters Thesis for some time for now, the topic being: “Phenomenological study of experiences of spirituality in musical improvisation” and I have been getting deep in to the Philosophy of Anthony Braxton’s compositions, which bend the line between improv and composition.

So, the problem at hand is: I just ordered the “triaxium writings” full set, which is going to be great, but I dont have the money right now to buy the composition notes (Full). If someone happens to have the book series on hand, could you give us the “sound classifications” that apparently are in the composition notes books. I think the clasisfications (wikipedia said about 100 different sound types) are to be found in the book, and i think that would be a great source of me for my up coming interviews for musicians that I study!

i have been searching just for a list of the sounds but nothing has come up on the internet. I dont get why Braxtons writings are so hard to come by, they seem to be like some “esoterical” writings that only the deepest of us have the acces to, which is in my oppinion in contrary to mr. Braxtons own ideology of music being kind of like a healing power in the world…

strange, but if anyone has the access to the list: can you please send pictures or something to it so I can study it to better understand sound for my Thesis!

I think I saw some of these in the Graham Lock book ‘Forces In Motion’, probably not 100 of them though. If you don’t have it, an enjoyable book worth picking up regardless. I’ve been buying vinyl he put out on Arista and some of them have extensive notes, some of which you can see in discogs scans (not all are super readable). It seems that in that era, the information was more accessible. Tri-axium Writings and Composition Notes are definitely on my list to get eventually.

I’ve been obsessed with Braxtons work of late.

I keep going back to this video. The guy studied with Braxton and I found his explanations really helpful

(no idea about the rest of the video makers work - & I’m kind of suspicious, without anything I can point at, of his views. At the very least there is unexamined privilege there)

Also - Braxton has been using Supercollider in his Diamond Curtain Wall Music - which I’d love to know more about but all I’ve found so far are references to the fact he is using it.

When you are in an academic program, especially at the masters level, it is within bounds for you to request the library purchase stuff like this.They often have a budget for this kind of thing and appreciate the chance to use it to get material that advances student research.
