So many great ideas!
I just jumped into the Norns train and i cant wait yo try it with so many external devices!
Id say my top list is:
Jazzmutant lemur
Novation launch control (needs to be usb powered)
Midi fighter
Shuttle control and shuttle mate
16n fader bank
Mutable yarns
Pyramid sequencer

My head is hurting!

How much power can norns provide to other usb devices?

Do i need something like this (mentioned on another post, similar to the monome switch i think):

I plan to use norns with a 256 and some usb midi controllers, so im looking into different options.

Can a powered usb hub be connected to norns?

Looking forward to getting mine in the mailbox!

I’m curious if you ever finished this for 2.0 I would love to get my hands on it!

Sorry, I haven’t updated any of my norns code to 2.0 yet. On my list of things to do! I’ll message you when I get around to it.

Hi!
Got my norns yesterday and im really impressed!
I have been pairing it up with a few of my other devices.
Its great to send it midi assigned cc lfos from the pyramid, use the twister as some kind of offset to these parameters and sequence it with a grid!

HI I got a faderbank 16n,
I’m trying to connect it to norns, Don’t know how to go about it
anyone have some ideas about midi setup, cables used, Thanks!

The faderbank sends MIDI via usb cable. Here’s the main page about faderbank and connectivity:

To map the cc’s to parameters:

Thanks!
What cable are you using?
not sure which one to use, since there is multiple inputs on the Faderbank

as @Jonny says, use the USB port on the 16n, not any of the TRS jacks.

So the same cable that I would use to power it, micro B to usb A?

Are you getting it working on all of the pages?
Mine is fine on page 1 but Norns won’t map any of the other pages.
The slightly odd way that Kenton have programmed it means that the buttons replicate the same CC mapping over sequential midi channels, so it seems that Norns is only listening on channel 1?

I’ve just plugged my QuNexus in and it seems to just work. Also, I’ve just noticed that this has an input for pedal in, for those further up this thread that were asking about options for that.

Hmm, it’s been a while since I plugged it in, but I’m pretty sure I just used channel 1 on the Kenton at the time… Which script are you using? It might be possible the script is only setup to listen on channel 1?

Yup, it’s power/data for USB-MIDI and also flashing the microcontroller.

I was using FM7, I thought that having all the different channels would let me map all the parameters, there’s loads of them. I’m not expert on Lua but I couldn’t see anywhere in the FM7 code that the CC routing would be stripped to just channel 1.
It’s the same on Molly the Poly, the mapping is fine for all the channel 1 stuff but won’t respond on the other channels.
I need to find something else that’s capable of sending on another midi channel but if the behaviour is the same then it looks like there some sort of if statement somewhere that’s set to only let channel 1 through? Alternatively, the other channels could be dead on my kenton?
The good news is that the midi mapping for channel 1 is really simple and makes this tiny box very controllable.

yeah to be honest, if it’s not picking up the other channels from the kenton, then I doubt it will from other midi devices either, as the kenton is class-compliant. perhaps this is a limitation on the norns side.

EDIT: OK I’ve just seen this on github, looks like the midi-learn is currently limited to channel 1 only, I’d imagine this will be updated though as it’s an open issue:

Well spotted! This sort of stuff is above my clearance so I’ll make do with 9 pots until this is fixed. Thanks Molotov!

Just out of curiosity, what apps are you using this many encoders for? I see posts about people using twister fighters and 16n’s, but I can’t quite figure out what for beyond maybe FM7.

I suppose it depends on what script your using, but I often map my 16N faders to control alot of stuff on the params page i.e. filterfreq, pulse width, decay time, delay time, amp level, pan, reverb amount etc…so you can easily fill up many of those faders with tasks to do. True I don’t think I’ve ever used ALL 16, but have come pretty close.

Okay, this makes good sense to me. I have a UC33 that has been out of use for a while (since I got a Maschine at a garage sale for cheap and set it up as a Ableton control surface). I guess this set of pots and sliders would be pretty useful in regards to the norns.

Thanks for the tip!

The Keystep finally got a firmware update! Lots of new cool features, and hopefully the bugs have been ironed out.

Hey all, I’d love to hear about your audio input setups for Norns. I just got mine and I’m really looking forward to live sampling and audio manipulation. What types of mic setups and other audio input setups do you use? I’m really looking for advice on a microphone setup that is higher quality than lo-fi but doesn’t have to be perfect (a little texture never hurts!)
