Whoaaaaaa! This thing looks sweet! What a bonkers little find.

Tested a few more cables and channels, and it looks like it’s an issue with the instrument itself. Other instruments get the boost you’d expect, but the one I bought it for doesn’t. Must be some sort of… impedance thing? EE knowledge fails me 🤷

This is what happens when you post on an iPhone and forget to copy the link

Thanks @dan_derks for knowing what I was going to post as well as helping me with my audio conundrum.

That’s odd. What is the instrument?

Typically the passive conversion boxes just have resistors and a transformer to change the impedance, so it should work indiscriminately with whatever signal you give it.

Do you have a norns or a norns shield?

The original comment made me think the issue was some balanced/unbalanced nonsense or odd stereo summing, but that would only be the case if you were using a norns shield, or a stereo TRS out on the instrument.

Just a normal guitar was the one that wasn’t working. Normal norns, not a shield. I see the same signal loss behavior when going into an audio interface so I don’t think it’s a norns issue. The reason I posted in here was because I got it to boost signal into norns in an away-from-the-computer setting. Other instruments (keys, synth, electric drums, etc) all see a signal gain as expected

oh yeah - a passive transformer is not gonna do that “in general.”

it will shift voltage up/down, but with a corresponding increase / decrease of current flowing from the source.

a low-impedance, powered (e.g. line level) source will [likely] have some sufficient current “on tap.”

a high-impedance, passive source like a guitar pickup can only deliver whatever power is actually being generated by magnets/strings. so instead of “stepping up” the transformer just dissipates some power.

(or something like that.)

anyways, for instruments you probably want some form of active preamplifier stage. (norns inputs have no gain at all, so just matching impedances will be insufficient to capture low-powered signals.) it’s a classic DIY project[*] if you’re interested that and sort of a perfect way in to analog electronics. (also, cheap.)

there are of course many commerical options as well, including a recent rash of weird tiny headphone guitar amps with digital FX. (imho there is something a little creepy about the un-serviceability of these things, shrug.)

([*] NB that for this particular circuit you would want to mod it for more gain by replacing R2 with a large-ish cap.)

(here is a reasonable-looking opamp-based circuit. though again you probably want to make some modifications for more gain - in this case increasing R2 or decreasing R1.)

Hi ! Please, Is it possible to use a powered USB hub for to have more USB ports for Norns ?

yes ! as long as every device gets enough power u can have as many as you want to my understanding

If you are looking for a hub that allows you to stay battery powered I can strongly recommend this UGREEN USB 3.0 Hub 4 Port Ultra Slim Data Hub with 5V Micro USB Power which can optionally be powered with another USB power source. I routinely use this combined with a USB battery pack with one cable to norns, the other to that hub.

Ok perfect :ok_hand:
Thank you @andrew and @ngwese for your answers.

Hello,

I’m thinking about getting Norns, and it looks like lots of fun in the field, but when I’m back at home/studio I’d love to have Norns in a 19" rack to integrate with my other studio gear (mostly just to keep things neat). I’m pretty handy and can build something but I’m wondering if anyone knows of a 19" rack kit that works well with Norns?

Thanks,

Tom

Mount it on a rack slide out drawer?

Norns is a little box, why mount it on a rack?

To integrate it with other studio gear and keep things neat.

I have mine hooked up to my patchbay in my rack, but i don’t otherwise have it mounted “to” the rack in any way. The interface of the norns is entirely on its top, so in a rack mount it’d take probably 3U of height (if you use right-angle 1/4" cables, 4U otherwise), but only an inch or so of depth. A slide-out shelf or drawer would make sense though!

Can i use more than one usb powered midi to cv devices and make actual use of lets say 2 of such giving me 3 pairs of cv/gate?

I suppose while it will be recognized by norns i am not sure if scripts could make use of it, any examples? Thanks
