Norns is a little box, why mount it on a rack?

To integrate it with other studio gear and keep things neat.

I have mine hooked up to my patchbay in my rack, but i don’t otherwise have it mounted “to” the rack in any way. The interface of the norns is entirely on its top, so in a rack mount it’d take probably 3U of height (if you use right-angle 1/4" cables, 4U otherwise), but only an inch or so of depth. A slide-out shelf or drawer would make sense though!

Can i use more than one usb powered midi to cv devices and make actual use of lets say 2 of such giving me 3 pairs of cv/gate?

I suppose while it will be recognized by norns i am not sure if scripts could make use of it, any examples? Thanks

Anyone powered pedals from one of Norns USB jacks? I’ve seen a few USB to 9v cables, but I’m not sure if they are reliable or safe. Does anyone have recs?

i have used such a thing to power low-current stuff like fuzz / gain - like 20mA, an order of magnitude less than a hungry DSP pedal. but even a hungry device should be fine, just be aware of the total draw of all connected devices and best keep it under 1A or so.

the issues i’ve had with that setup are more about noise. the 5v can be a little gunky and carry some bleed from clocks, etc, so may be problematic for powering a gain circuit depending on your tolerance. (no different from most laptop USB jacks in this respect - e.g. i just experienced dealbreaking noise coming outta a moog when it was also acting as a USB midi controller.)

haven’t compared different brands, the thing i have is cheap and generic, maybe there are fancier solutions that perform better power filtering.

i haven’t already received my norns (coming in a couple of days) and I am already making a midi controller for it! Guess I will add a midi din port and a power switch later

looks great.
i’m always looking for good controllers but have not really tried to DIY one yet (other than a few foot pedals w/ mixed results)

Quick tip: Many hardshell cases advertised for Elgato Stream Decks work well with Shield and Fates. Factory norns might be a tight fit, since I think its just a bit larger than Fates? For a Shield, a standard-size Stream Deck case could also fit a power supply or compact battery bank on the side. A Stream Deck XL case would be more roomy and moddable, I’m sure. Just make sure the case isn’t intended to be perfectly flush on the top; mine has a domed area for cables so even the taller Shield’s encoders have enough room.

Might not be quite the type of foot control you want, and I haven’t used mine extensively, but the Line 6 FBV Express mk. II seems to work perfectly well.

Also on the hunt for a single pedal solution. Intention is to use it as a velocity control. Should I just find ~a~ pedal with midi over USB and assign velocity to it, or is that an over-simplification?

This is one of those things that seems, intuitively, like not a big deal, but it looks like lots of people are having trouble finding a solution, and it’s got me a bit lost as to… why? Something about HID compliance? Or is USB expression pedal just not a thing?
