Seems like my m-audio uno is a bit broken on it’s side(no more clock signals only note on and offs). Does anyone have some good midi interface recommendations for norns?

@Justmat the Apple Magic Trackpad stuff is super cool! Do you (or anyone else) know if it’s possible to get multitouch and pressure data out of one for use with norns?

I tried for a bit, but couldn’t figure it out. I was only getting x, y, and click. It would be awesome if you could use multi-touch!

ah cool thanks @Justmat @okyeron

there seems like there’s a lot of quirky linux-fu to get it to recognize.

Let’s say I was to explore this. Would the path to getting it work be:

as a side note, trying to understand https://github.com/okyeron/hid-demo

I can’t tell where hid (singluar) is defined. it’s the thing (table, I think) where you are getting devices, vports, connect, etc. can you explain that a little bit?

I’m looking at the faderfox lv2… I have a mio2 midi interface so the lack of USB shouldn’t be an issue right?

the joystick is extremely enticing

Just got a Fates build that I’m expanding into a hardware setup - anyone here achieved just basic midi clock over USB with an Analog Rytm?

it’s probably going to depend somewhat on the specific scripts you’re using. Each script has it’s own midi/clock implementation.

What script are you using? What are your physical connections between the devices? What’s working/not-working?

Late reply: iCM4+ works seamlessly with Norns/Computer integration. It definitely gives you enough rope to hang yourself with in the config tool (you can totally get into midi feedback loops), but if you set it up with care it’s brilliant. I’ve taken to just sending all midi events to the computer and using http://notahat.com/midi_patchbay/ to filter and route.

Hey! Gleaned as much from this thread, but it seemed good to ask.

Summary

So right now I’ve got an SE-02 and an ARmkII both running into Fates via USB. I’m having no trouble sending clock/notes out to the SE-02, and if I set Fates’ clock source to internal (on any script), the Elektron locks in immediately if set to receive.

Tried with: Arp Index, Awake (and variants), Circles, Dunes, Foulplay, Less Concepts, Rebound - Pretty much everything I have installed in which syncing to clock would be useful or necessary. I confirmed that Link is working via Bitwig, buuuuuut my MBP is one generation too old to connect to overbridge, which would make this a non-issue otherwise. <- turned out to be incorrect

Edit: Did some digging and realized that my overbridge woes were caused by incorrect permissions, so that’s now solved, and my syncing issues via Link along with it. USB Midi still never worked, but I’m not at least able to play as intended.

How do you like the colour box? Particularly in the context of using it with norns.

this little 9v powered mixer seems like it was made for norns (long before norns existed)

I picked up aPimoroni Keybow 12-key to use with a small raspi Orca setup. I’ve since cannibalized that configuration to build Fates, and remembered that I had this. It runs on a PiZero and in addition to HID keys, has an experimental MIDI mode. All of which is scriptable with Lua. It does seem that there are lots of USB 10-key options out there that would fit in with the Norns footprint

@Frederickk just wanted to say thanks for Prost and leading me to platformio.
I ordered a couple of atmega32u4’s ages ago to make usb midi adaptors / interfaces for my Fates but found it not as straightforward as I initially thought.

Flashing Prost could not be easier and I will have a working midi adapter (1/2 Prost?) will post some photo’s once I get my optocoupler sorted.

Also looks like platformio supports a bunch of other microcontrollers I have spare … certainly better than the Arduino IDE

Great to hear! Keep me posted on how it works out.

Oh, I just got an assortment of Mx switches for a keyboard project, including some silent linear (Outemu silent grey) that are now looking for a home. Do you have a 12key layout for ORCA? Is it chorded?

@neauoire made a nice chorded layout called Juni for this.

I found this 18 key usb keyboard and thinking how it could be used to control norns scripts.
I have 0 coding experince.
I’m going to start with a simple key click plays sound script.
Eventually I think it would be pretty cool to do a 16 step grid with this horizontal setup on the right side(including the enter key) and then the 0 and . Keys would switch instruments quickly.
The norns interface would show the currently selected sound and show the notes on the grid. The encoder would let you change sound parameters(pitch, release).
Would be really fast interface compared to a lot of the sequence based apps that rely on encoder turning for sound select and then turn the encoder to the slot and button press to enter notes. This would allow you to really play the sequencer. Also maybe I could have the led blink the bpm.

Also barely in the pic to the left. I wanted a battery powered fates, but didn’t want to go drop 60-70 on a battery that outputs 3a as I already have 2 portable batteries that I use for the octatrack and analog four.
One of my batteries has a 12v output through a dc Barrel jack so I bought a dc to dc transformer with usbc on one end from amazon and soldered a dc Barrel jack to the leads from the transformer and now I have power for the fates for 12 dollars not including the cost of my battery.

First - see if the keypad shows up in the SYSTEM>DEVICES>HID menu. (I probably should).

Then you could get my hid_demo scripts to see what codes/keys are being sent from the keypad. Then script something up

Yeah I have done all that.
It seems good!
The only thing Im worried about is the caps lock. It toggles the led and I’m hoping that can be changed through the script.
Next up is going through the tutorial studies and learning lua stuff.
