worth checking what happens when you draw the usb power from a couple different sources. The norns draws a fair amount of current and something like an laptop USB-a plug might be loaded pretty heavily from it.

I’ve got some beefy portable battery packs and some power strips with USB plugs that seem to work fine for me.

These look pretty good for what I’m after. I assume the only option would be to power it off Norns? Any setup needed?

No setup required from what I remember – it’s class compliant – but if you want to choose specific CC #s or set the behavior of the switches (momentary vs. latching), you’ll need to download the editor software called Line 6 FBV Control, which is Mac/Win only, but the settings you choose with it are permanent so they’ll apply to Norns too.

My Norns has been able to power it with no problem, looks like it draws around 150mA.

Great, thanks! I’ll report back if end up adding a data point.

Yes portable batteries are working but not charging Norns directly from my mac for example (noise). The issue is more the fact that the Norms usb plug is US only  so need maybe to buy another one for Europe (France)

Is anyone using Midi Usb-Usb to send midi notes from Norns to Ableton? I’m wondering if it would make these two work together… I know 2host could do the trick too, but due to the current situation I can’t access a solder station and build one.

you can not just hook a regular old usb cable from norns to the computer and have it communicate over midi. You could use a USB to midi on both ends tho

Found this case at Harbor Freight. Not a bad option for the money ($40) and everything fits nice and snug.
My new work briefcase

You can use 2 of the midi din to USB adapters with F/F din adapters to connect them

Or I can get you a built 2host (dm for that)

You may want to look into the products of Audiofront, such as the MIDI Expression. Hope this helps you.

hi! got a uc33 too, did you ever tru to send/receive midi via the 5 pin ports from/to norns? should be able to da as a midi interface?

As a midi USB interface, it’s class compliant! Just plug it in and it’ll show up in devices!

sorry maybe i was not clear with my question. i already use the uc33 as a midi controller for my norns, but i would really love to use the uc 33 5 pin ports as midi in and out to interface with my octatrack, in both directions. as i try to send or receive anything my norns doesn’t actually work!

Ooooooh, basically if I’ve used it as a passthrough device! Honestly, that might end up being more trouble than it’s worth. Part of the problem is that midi channel reception is handled on a per-script basis on the Norns. So like, maybe you could define which channel you want those signals to come through? I don’t know, honestly.

i know. is just that i have this uc33 since i was 15 and it always work for me anytime! plus, it actually act as a passthrough device for my octatrack and ableton (working smootly). as @okyeron found out, uc33 shows up on a computer as two devices: port 1 and port 2. usb is handled form n1 and din port from number 2 as i assume from tweaking from ableton, but norns only see port 1!

Hi
I was wondering if the headphone jack of the Norns can handle a DT770 250 ohm? Or better to use a DT770 80 ohm

Who is using Norns + OP-Z?
Any nice sweet spots or challenges?

i use this combo a lot… so far i haven’t found anything that didn’t work as expected. mostly i use the z to get sounds into fun norns apps. and mainly that because the z is even smaller than the op-1. i still can’t believe how tiny the z is and norns too. crazy power that basically fits in my coat pocket if i want it to. also, both being battery powered of course makes a great pair out and about.

i’ve been performing out with norns sending midi from loom into the z, so i can use the z synth engines. stock z cable, straight out of norns… couldn’t be better!
