Yeah, Twister is great with Norns. Below is a link for a sequencer I made for it last year. I’ll post updated code for this after 2.0 is officially released. I was also thinking of writing some generic utilities for facilitating communication between the Norns and MFT. There are a couple of tedious things that could be made easier.

Also, I’m really looking forward to v1 of VCV Rack, which will enable midi-mapping with a controller like MFT. IMO, combining the benefits of virtual modular with physical knobs and buttons will be amazing.

My Norns 2.0 adventure is coinciding with the potential acquisition of a beefy iPad. Has there been a discussion (I searched but did not find) of ways in which the artful practitioner could integrate Norns and apps on the iPad for effects processing, recording audio output or even full DAW-ing?

I don’t know if it’s been discussed yet but I know @kin.sventa does incredible stuff with those two (and an octatrack).

aww thank you for the kind words. yea i’ve found the ipad / norns combination to be an awesome pair. @bobbcorr you can totally do all those things though i’ve found some more rewarding than others. first, you are really gonna need an audio interface for your ipad and i couldn’t recommend the iconnecticity audio 4+ enough. 4 audio ins/outs midi in/out and two usb ports one for your computer and one specifically for your ipad. i use an awesome ios app called aum to do all the routing, you can send whatver app through whatever output, or send norns in to whatver app for processing and route all that to your ios daw of choice. i use this as my audio interface for both my studio / ios so for me its a win win

ive found ios daws to be kind of cumbersome and un inspiring but useful as straight recorders. i can record a multitrack jam session with intricate routing / effects processing and then take the recording over to ableton for editing.

ive also had luck sending midi out of norns using the mio usb to midi cable in to ios apps, though i often end up using norns sc engines as sound sources as they sound better to my ears.

sound processing and live sampling in to ios is where i think ios shines. runing norns in to borderlands granular is amazing as is live sampling audio in to samplr. all of which is exremly easy to do ( pretty much plug and play ) with an audio interface and aum.

just to share, my fav apps are borderlands ( granulator with live input ) samplr ( touchable sampler with the most intuitive interface i’ve ever some across, also has live input ) pattering ( euclidian drum machine ) audulus ( visual programing modular environment ) fugue machine ( 4 playhead sequencer , great for melody creation ) animoog ( weird “wavetable” i guess, synthesier ) and of course aum for routing everything together.

How do you use Samplr in AUM? Can you get live input into Samplr and then run Samplr out into fx?

i don’t know exactly why but when i start up samplr in aum, it says it is not recognized. but if i try one more time, it opens up. i know its not the most elegant solution but it works for me. it then seems to default to allowing input 1 on my interface to be the live input for samplr. and it works perfectly. you can then run it through effects as normal in aum.

Wow, I need to try that!

Thank you for that extraordinarily detailed (and very generous) description. This is a roadmap to wonderland for me. Wow.

If you wouldn’t mind a few more questions:

  1. I notice you make good use of the Kork Nanokontrol 2 - are there other Norns controllers you’d recommend?

  2. I’ve got an Audio Damage ODIO that I’ve used in the past to talk to iOS … it’s a class-compliant USB audio device, so I should be able to feed it as an input into the iconnectivity audio 4+ … does that sound right? So I could route Norns and my eurorack through the interface into iOS together through the same interface?

  3. I’d be curious to hear what your choice of iOS “straight up recorders” is.

I’ve used (and enjoyed) Borderlands, Samplr, Audulus, Fugue Machine and a few others, so I approve of your list

Thank you again!

you’re very welcome.

  1. the only midi controller i have used with norns is the midi fighter twister. it works great. mapping it to norns could not be easier.

  2. woa was not familiar with this module. pretty cool. unfortunately, ios does not support multiple / aggregate audio interfaces. this was a let down for me too as i thought i would be able to use my es-8 and icconecivity audio 4+ at the same time. but in case i miss understood the question, you can route and record multiple sources at the same time with a single interface. so for example i can record my modular and volca in through different inputs at the same time and i can use aum to route everything.

  3. i have used auria as a recorder. i don’t really use it for anything else.

I just got norns/grid and would love to map my midi fighter twister to it. Any pointers? Thanks!

The best thing about Auria is that it offers all the Fab Filter plug-ins. They do a sale several times a year and they are like $10ea. Great plugins that are great on the touch screen.

To set up midi controllers just head to the params page. Hold key 1 and then scroll to enable cc-mapping. Then release key 1 and you will find that the params page has most of the parameters enabled for mapping. Then you scroll to the parameter you want to map, press key 3 and wiggle a knob on the controller, and it’s mapped. Repeat as needed and then press key 1 to go save the configuration.

Excellent, thanks @AlessandroBonino!

Thanks for the responses! Does anyone know of any iPad apps that could emulate the Grid and send data to the Norns via usb/midi that way?

TouchOSC will work over WiFi - but you’d need to do some OSC tweaking in scripts since I don’t think many scripts use OSC right now

unfortunately apple’s policies make it impossible to directly emulate a monome grid on iOS (without joining their costly MFi certification program.)

there are many OSC and MIDI control apps, some of which support USB connections.

Any battery recommendations?

I have one of these which I’m fairly happy with:

I think there are newer models. IIRC my informal test of norns + grid running off this particular battery got me something like 15-20 hours. Having 2x USB-A ports is nice as I can run 2x norns or 1x norns and a Sound Devices preamp off this.

These two pedals are right in my sights too. I had been staring at the Count to Five but the Volante seems … well, just more hi-fi.

I picked up both and while I haven’t had as much time to dig deep, my first reaction is these are fantastic and everything I was hoping for and then some. I also picked up Tomkat’s Cloudy (Clouds in a pedal format) and I am in heaven now. Loving these all immensely - highly recommend!
