I have played around in Max with direct feedback of gl textures. Result gets pretty wild, but hard to capture.

In earlier iterations of Quicktime and Mac OS, I used to encode videos as divx or xvid, then duplicate them and cancel the duplication before it finished. The result was these corrupted files that, as you scrubbed through them, retained some earlier frames cross blurred/broken/smeared with later frames. My trick no longer works with modern software.

I guess this is a long shot, but I faintly remember someone somewhere who made a way to produce this effect through code, but I can’t figure out how to find his site, if it still exists.

I’m sorry I can’t follow up with an illustrative example, but the relevant images are on a separate drive. Thanks for any insight!

then control-C before it finishes

i had a first go at datamoshing yesterday. the video result is hit or miss, but there are some really nice moments, i think

i used avidemux for the moshing, and the glitching starts at 10 seconds in.

I’m looking for a glossary of glitches.

Does anyone know if a resource that explains/categorises/provides examples of analogue video glitches?

I’ve been thinking about doing some video demos of various eurorack video glitch modules and it would be super useful to know about the existing vocabulary.

I think i was still using Sony Vegas back then although there’s a slight chance I had moved to Premiere Pro at that point (it’s as over 10 years ago).

Fwiw I use Davinci Resolve now - light years better than FCpro or Premiere Pro imo although I still have a soft spot for Vegas as it was my first Daw as well as using it for most of my video work with it before moving on.

Anyway, the first video was mostly an accident that I then polished. My partner was out of the country and desperate that I capture the final episode of some TV show she was going to miss. When I recorded it there must have been a DRM scrambler in place that resulted in the glitches. After that, it was mostly a process of slowing down the video and trying to get the transitions to be more gradual and interesting. Then it was a matter of working with the colour to bring out all the different hues.

The second video was different and made for a film festival. I used a video by an artists well known for cut up techniques (I’m sure you can guess who) and then tried to base my approach on their concept.

So I layered and chopped the video so that it was repeated and layered in interesting ways. Much of it involved using the video equivalent editing techniques that I use in my audio work (layering, reversing, stretching etc) and experimenting with different blend/composite modes between the layers. Mostly experimenting tbh once I came across an aesthetic I liked.

One interesting thing in the last work is that it’s actually quite rhythmic - like, a lot. And when the audio was still in the video (which I kept with the original edit) the rhythmic effect was too pronounced. Removing the audio made the rhythmic aspect more subtle and interesting (for me anyway).

One last thing - it was quite satisfying to make two long form videos that were silent (as someone who is primarily a sound artist and composer).

Yes! I totally know what you mean. It can be really cool to shut off the aural part of your senses and focus on something else. But also, decoupling the visual from the Sonic can bring a new (awesome) level of abstraction.
