Spending my time in Berlin currently and I must say I love this city. I can recommend visiting Blacklist bar for its gorgeous 60s interior design. I was passing by in the bus, saw it and couldn’t resist the temptation to get in. Get there in the evening time to feel the vibe. Cheers.

So Berlinsters, I’m hopefully gonna go to this SM-LL show SM-LL, Conditional, FLUF - July European Mini-Tour next month. Is anyone else attending?

I’m going to Berlin in November with my beloved one. Any hotel/airnbnb to recommend in cool places ?

In terms of places to stay, transportation is a big thing to look out for? Near the U7 / U8 is great, as is anywhere on the ring (the train that goes around the city, S41/S42). I love most of the neighborhoods around Tempelhof, maybe over into Schoneberg. Kreuzberg / Neukoln are pretty classic berlin-y neighborhoods, but where they land on the “exciting” <> “hot mess” spectrum is block-by-block and a matter of personal taste (still lots of amazing possibilities and apartments there).

I’ve had pretty fantastic luck with airbnb’s in the past, but find one now because they’ll disappear. https://en.wg-suche.de has lots of short term sublets, if you’re staying more than a week / price is important / you can navigate the german.

I’d also recommend Kreuzkölln (aka Reuterkiez: the area where Kreuberg and Neukölln meet). Lots of cool places close to the canal, also close to Schneiders Laden and Patch Point.
For live music check out Experimental Berlin, Funkhaus, Ausland, Echtzeitmusik

For one month plus sublets both Craigslist and Facebook are worth a look. Both tend more towards expats, so potentially easier for non-German speakers. As mentioned above places go very quick – especially the good ones – so don’t sleep on it.

Be aware that a lot of the sublets are not strictly legal (although not usually an issue unless you’re trying to Anmeldung).

Thanks @scztt, @rklem and @robbie ! We are just coming for a long weekend. I’ll search around Tempelhof, Schoneberg. Kreuzberg / Neukoln.
Thanks for the pointers for live music too !!
Cheers

I’m going to be in Berlin this weekend as my girlfriend is running the Marathon. I need to have a read through the thread and pick out any good tips!

Looking for a good vegetarian place to go for a celebratory meal afterwards.

most of places serve vegetarian dishes in Kreuzberg. Walk down on Oranienstrase from Oranienplaz towards Görlitzer Bahnhof and check the places on both side of the street. These days I tend to enjoy Vietnamese vegetarian kitchen - huge Pho bowls of vegetables with rice noodles and tofu for like 6EUR. Top of my head I would suggest the one in the beginning of Maybachhufer (next to Kottbusser bridge) but there are many and the quality is great. Also, vegetarian street food is a thing in Kreuzberg, check the Wrapublic in Oranienplatz.

If you like it a bit more fancy, there are also many a bit more upscale options. Cookies Cream comes to mind …

I’m visiting Berlin the next few days. I’ve been there a couple of times, love everything about the city. However I found it hard to track down some interesting music/art events outside the mainstream of the travel guide.

I’m interested in anything art, in music this includes electronic, experimental, classical, jazz.

Any recommendations?

hey hey!
check if something interesting is happening at “klunkerkranich”, it’s a rooftop bar/urban gardening spot on top of a car park in neukoelln. saw some really nice jazzy acts there (pre covid, don’t know how they do it now).
also, if you’re an electronics nerd too, check out the “computerspielemuseum”. it’s about all that old gaming consoles and everything, worth a visit.
i could recommend you loads of music venues, but i think most if them are not open yet due to covid regulations.
the area around “revaler99” is interesting too, loads of music venues, street art, and rough buildings.

Which area are you staying in? What type of music are you looking for?
A lot of stuff is still shut down or restricted access, so it is not the best timing, however if you are into improvised stuff, I think this calendar is a must (yeah it is up thread as well, still…time changes).
Here is the art stuff: Exhibitions - INDEX Berlin

Apart from that, it really depends what your interests are, go down Kantstr. in the old west for quite a good variety of food, some good asian stuff there. Check out Rehberge as an alternative to Hasenheide, go to Tiergarten, breathe in, breathe out.
That being said, I am really out of touch with most things that relate to Neukölln for example. Pretty sure others around here have more input.
If you like nature, go to Neu Venedig, rent a boat, look at that weird parallel universe.

Hey,

Try to look into artists you like and check out where they play. Sometimes I find myself in places that otherwise I wouldnt have go to.

In general it is always good to check out what is happening at Ausland, KM28, Traumabar, Ohm or Roter Salon. Nothing is always consistant, so always check the lineup - at least I do.

Promoters like Kiezsalon, Creamcake or Kultur Büro Elisabeth do nice things and have calenders on their pages, too.

There is a newsletter called Echtzeitmusik with events listed weekly. A lot of Jazz and sound art. Next to events this can also provide an overview regarding venues. — EDIT: Oh. Already mentioned five times in here

Hope that helps.

If you’re here this evening, this should be really nice:

and this:

and this looks maybe a little corny but maybe cool:

In general, indoor stuff seems to be quite limited, but there are a decent number of outdoor music things happening. Getting in to anything is difficult because capacity is limited, so don’t get emotionally invested in seeing anything in particular  - but then again, if you get into something it feels a bit special.

@doomglue’s suggestion of Index Berlin is a good one - enough openings are happening that you can have a really fun Friday/Saturday evening bouncing around and seeing art. Somewhere on the site there’s a “this weekend” filter that will show openings and events.
Here’s the next few days of events: Exhibitions - INDEX Berlin
Check the map view, you can sometimes just pick an area and hit a few things all at once.

Also, my friend Alex’s show is going up this weekend - go to this opening, Ashley is cool and so is Alex, these openings are fun:

I still haven’t been, but I think the big art show at Berghain is quite cool (putting aside some of the dodgy politics about that show…)

There are a few events at https://www.hkw.de/ in the next few days. The Forensic Architecture show there right now is 100% worth spending an entire afternoon at. KW and Gropius Bau I think have good shows right now also.

If you end up near Wedding, this bookstore just opened and has lots of nice art and even sound studies books, and is just a really nice place to hang out and read for a while: http://a-p.berlin/

PatchPoint and Schneidersladen are definitely nice places to visit if you want to be in a room with a lot of synths. After Schneidersladen, go across the street and drink a beer at Sudblock, that place is cute in the summer.

Basically anything you go to will require a covid test the same day. There are covid test places EVERYWHERE, that are free and only take ~15 minutes, plan to just get one every day in the morning. You don’t really need an appointment, they’re all walk up.

Sidenote: you currently need to book a date at SchneidersLaden via their email. Patch Point might still be shut or their webpage is not up to date?
If you like records, there a lots of options as well… But yeah, HKW is nice! Also nice to see a new bookstore in my hood.

For experimental music, beyond what others said, I’d specifically suggest Music for the Cosmos outside Petersburg Art Space on Thursday if there’s nice wheather, maybe I’ll drop by too (drop me a line if you decide to go). Bring your own beer and listen to it lying on the lawn on the other side of the Spree river.
There’s also an event by Christina Kubisch at Galerie Mazzoli if you’re into sound art, and this big exhibition in Berghain (studio.berlin), whose ethics is questionable but I think it might be interesting for those not used to Berghain. There’s also the Listening Biennial at Errant Sound if you’re into soundstudiesy things.
You may find something more at Index Berlin for art shows or on Facebook events.

Curious what is questionable ethically. This exhibition in particular? I can’t read German so I’m not sure what the exhibition is about but I’ve always wanted to go to Berghain someday.

They received quite a bit of public money for that show (in 2020 at least), partnered with billionaire collector Boros, the ticket is quite expensive, and participating artists received very little money.
