Grid kit soldering

I’ve done some SMD soldering before with a hot air rework station such as this: http://www.amazon.com/Saike-852D-Digital-Soldering-System/dp/B007G36ME2 It was very easy and quick to do. The instructions for the grid kit recommend using a soldering iron. Is there any reason that using a soldering iron would be more preferable to the hot air rework station? Anyone foresee any problems? It seems like using a soldering iron would take much more time, and open up more possibilities for error.

I tried. You melt the LEDs. You could probably use solder paste instead of a spool. I think I tried that on a few. Just use the soldering iron instead of the hot air.
