So, guess I’m back with another question that might be even more stupid than the ones I’ve been asking before

In the last weeks I’ve been using my eurorack setup mostly for processing sounds coming from external sources (non-eurorack synths like the MFB Tanzmaus or MAM MB33). So the thing I’m doing most of the time is plugging my external gear directly into a module using one of these cables. So I’m not using any specialinput module (which I probably should, but I’m a bit hesitant to spend valuable rack space for something that “boring”).

It works perfectly fine with all my modules (like Cold Mac, Three Sisters or Erbe Verb), but for some reason I cannot hear (or record) anything if I plug my external gear into W/ as described above. Is there something special about W/'s input jack that I’ve been missing?

EDIT: Okay, so after trying around a bit I figured out that the problem only occurred when using my Korg Monologue. Turns out I have to use the headphone out and not the regular output jack. Which means I should a) probably go get some sleep and b) take some time to recap the basics of how audio cables and jacks work. :flushed:

Still wondering why it worked with all other modules besides W/ though…

W/‘s input jack is actually a stereo jack but it expects to be used with a standard TS modular cable. As such it’s easy to detect the presence (or lack) of a cable. W/ uses this knowledge as if there’s no input cable present it need not write any content to tape (just zeroes)…

Long story short, don’t use stereo (read TRS) cables woth W/.

Also, because the jacks used for W/ are a bit different from the ones used in all my other modules I’ve had situations where I thought a cable was properly plugged in when it was actually not plugged completely. Worth checking too.

Hello all, i’m having some issues with my w/ and i’m hoping you can help.
I’ve updated to the new firmware and now when I turn on the module no lights come on.
I’ve tried twice and it’s successfully updates just not reboots itself, it’s like it hangs.
I formatted the SD card, tried a new card and wiped the tape but to no avail, it still comes up with no lights, not even izzy!
Any ideas?
Cheers

Hi all, I’m new to W/. I haven’t encountered any problems, but I am finding myself getting “lost” on my tape.

Does the module indicate the start of the tape in any way? I can’t tell if I’m just endlessly rewinding or what, especially since I can’t necessarily remember what speed I recorded at or what speed I’m travelling at.

i usually watch the lights above loop for indication of activity while rewinding. as you rewind, the left yellow light will brighten as you approach a cue point, and once you pass the cue, the white light will light up and dim as you move further away.

when you reach either end of the tape, the respective directional light will brighten, but will never pass as you’ve reached the end of the tape. in this case, the yellow light should come on and stay on when you reach the start of the tape

I had a similar problem with one I bought secondhand that it was unresponsive - lights were on, but wouldn’t function (someone was selling it off super cheap as a result).

What worked for me was downloading the ISO file from the Whimsical Raps github, and using Balena Etcher to burn it to a new SD card.
W/ powered up fine and now works a treat!

yes, you have a faulty one. there’s apparently a fix coming but I have an RMA with CTRL for one and i am hunting another solution in the mean time

thanks peeps! stay safe

Hey team! Just was curious what some people’s wait times were in turn around when sending in their modules to the whimsical raps teams for repair. Sent my w/ in a few weeks ago and haven’t heard anything back in terms of arrival, repair status or potential turn around.

I’m guessing that maybe COVID has put a stop to operations there, but curious what y’all’s experience has been.

Edit: got an awesome and timely response from @Galapagoose. Thanks for all the hard work and awesome sound making machines!

Hi all,

I’ve been having a few issues pop up:

  1. I primarily use this as a looping delay, it seems to fall out of it’s mode often needing a reboot (the amount of times I’ve rebooted quickly in frustration then lost my kria sequence is high).

  2. It locked up completely yesterday and began responding after I formatted the SD card. Now, there is a heap of noise in the freshly formatted SD card so when Izzy starts up I can’t hear the instructions. I used the instructions (thanks so much @Justmat !!!).

Now I’m able to use it but it is much more noisey and clicky than it was before, instead of adding character it just ruins mixes.

I am going to try a new SD card, but after loving this module for years (I bought in first batch) I am at wits end.

Does anyone have any tips apart from a new SD card?

i’m hoping it’s possible to make the W/, while long pressing Record, to count to, say, 2 seconds before it switches over to Settings Global?

It’s punishing if you meant to press Rec while it’s looping, and held your finger there for a little too long, it switched to Global, but you didn’t notice, then pressing Rec again toggles the input monitoring - basically no room for error there, as it cascades into other unintended things.

I also think while in Settings Global, the pulsing lights should be way more noticeable.

So I just got my W/ yesterday and it seems to have some issues and/or I am not the brightest bulb in the batch. On a regular boot up, I cannot hear anything when plugging a sound source into in. If i boot into Izzy, I can get through part of the tutorial up until it tells me to plug in a sound source, at which point I hear a jumble of stuff and can only continue by cycling to the next part. I have erased the tape on boot to see if this would fix it (toggle down + record). Any suggestions?

Maybe input monitoring is turned off? Hold Rec for a second to enter global mode. Press Rec to toggle input monitoring. exit global mode with toggle up.

welp officially not the brightest bulb. That did it @Justmat! Thank you much. I will probably be bouncing in here a lot :frowning:

Glad that did the trick  Enjoy your W/! (and welcome to lines!)

Will do. Thank you again. Any reason that the tutorial (Izzy would act odd like that when plugging audio in) or is that from possibly my first attempt to do it?

Hard to say without actually hearing the oddity. Does it still happen with monitoring turned on?

will check. Also the recorded audio has a lot of clicks and pops.

Yep. Still has the same issue when booting into Izzy. A lot of noise along with my sound source and her voice. This occurs when it asks me to plug in an audio source and record. Makes going to the next step almost impossible. When starting regularly, the recorded audio has a lots of pops and clicks.
