One thing that is not necessarily super clear is that you have to do the setting once for This and once for That, I think they are decoupled. Just in case you did the setup using a cable in the other jack…

Beyond that, I don’t know so I’ll leave actual W/ experts answer your question .

Voltage into THAT can control playback direction/speed if PLAY is not engaged. Press play and things might be back to normal if you haven’t changed the THIS/THAT behavior.

So, after clearing all tapes and setting both THIS and THAT to default I still experienced the same problems. However, after randomly (un)plugging THAT and hitting record several times it seems to work again…

Didn’t know the settings fore THIS and THAT are decoupled, thanks for the info!

I still think w/ is a great little module, but the longer I’m using it without being able to even grasp the basics (about half a year now), I’m getting the feeling that it’s probably not the right thing for me… Maybe I would be better off with a Morphagene, however, I still like a lot of things about w/ (the size, the idea of having one long continuous tape to record on etc.) so I’ll keep it for now, hoping for future enlightenment…

Something that’s been really useful for me is practicing figuring what each of the little lights on the module is trying to tell you. If I’m lost, I notice that it’s nearly always because my brain’s model for what W/ is doing doesn’t agree with what it is telling me that it is doing.

For instance, here is what my module is telling me currently. It is in live mode (both lights above the toggle are on), moving at a moderate speed (rate of light flashing above toggle), looping (lights above loop) a very short bit of tape (rate of light flashing above loop), the transport is rolling forwards (white light above play), recording is engaged (white light above record), somewhere between overdubbing and overwriting (orange light over record brightness) and audio is both entering and leaving the unit (orange and white lights over in, respectively).

I guess that’s exactly the situation I’m finding myself in again and again. So I probably should spend some more time memorizing the meanings of the different lights

Just curious, would swapping cards also improve things like the module remembering which THIS and THAT cv modes or the current tape between power cycles? My w/ doesn’t seem to consistently remember its previous state, and I haven’t been able to deduce a pattern to this behavior. Not sure if that info would be stored on the card or in the microcontroller’s memory.

CV mode is saved in the flash-memory of the module, so changing the card shouldn’t have an impact. This is slated to change in the 2.0 update, which will store everything on the card.

There are a few rules about when metadata like this will be saved (as it can cause clicks in the audio). Currently the module must be in NAV mode and the tape speed must be zero for the params to be saved. I acknowledge this can be problematic with cv-mode selection (as there is likely a non-zero voltage in THAT jack)…

Hello is there a command or any way to address individual w/s yet
Via teletype?
Thanks

If this is the case then i truly have a faulty one. I’ve tried new cards and though the behavior is very similar and it will actually work if i place a working card in the device, when i place a new card in the shakey one it does not work.

I bought it from Control – should i contact them for a replacement then? It was bought this year

no, there is not yet a way to have Teletype address multiple W/s separately

Ok I didn’t think so
Thanks for the replying

My W/ corrupted its new SD card already. In just a few hours (not much music time for me these days so it took a couple of weeks to get there).

@Galapagoose : how can I get a replacement SD card that actually works ? Or is there something I can do with the ones I already have (original and the other one I bought) ?

Update : I removed the module from the case, ejected and reinserted the micro SD card and things seem to be back to normal.

What was recorded previously is still there so there was no obvious data corruption.

I’m glad it works but a bit worried about this potentially happening again later… Especially since removing modules from my small Palette case is a bit of a pita (tight fit and cables power/i2c everywhere).

So, guess I’m back with another question that might be even more stupid than the ones I’ve been asking before

In the last weeks I’ve been using my eurorack setup mostly for processing sounds coming from external sources (non-eurorack synths like the MFB Tanzmaus or MAM MB33). So the thing I’m doing most of the time is plugging my external gear directly into a module using one of these cables. So I’m not using any specialinput module (which I probably should, but I’m a bit hesitant to spend valuable rack space for something that “boring”).

It works perfectly fine with all my modules (like Cold Mac, Three Sisters or Erbe Verb), but for some reason I cannot hear (or record) anything if I plug my external gear into W/ as described above. Is there something special about W/'s input jack that I’ve been missing?

EDIT: Okay, so after trying around a bit I figured out that the problem only occurred when using my Korg Monologue. Turns out I have to use the headphone out and not the regular output jack. Which means I should a) probably go get some sleep and b) take some time to recap the basics of how audio cables and jacks work. :flushed:

Still wondering why it worked with all other modules besides W/ though…

W/‘s input jack is actually a stereo jack but it expects to be used with a standard TS modular cable. As such it’s easy to detect the presence (or lack) of a cable. W/ uses this knowledge as if there’s no input cable present it need not write any content to tape (just zeroes)…

Long story short, don’t use stereo (read TRS) cables woth W/.

Also, because the jacks used for W/ are a bit different from the ones used in all my other modules I’ve had situations where I thought a cable was properly plugged in when it was actually not plugged completely. Worth checking too.

Hello all, i’m having some issues with my w/ and i’m hoping you can help.
I’ve updated to the new firmware and now when I turn on the module no lights come on.
I’ve tried twice and it’s successfully updates just not reboots itself, it’s like it hangs.
I formatted the SD card, tried a new card and wiped the tape but to no avail, it still comes up with no lights, not even izzy!
Any ideas?
Cheers

Hi all, I’m new to W/. I haven’t encountered any problems, but I am finding myself getting “lost” on my tape.

Does the module indicate the start of the tape in any way? I can’t tell if I’m just endlessly rewinding or what, especially since I can’t necessarily remember what speed I recorded at or what speed I’m travelling at.

i usually watch the lights above loop for indication of activity while rewinding. as you rewind, the left yellow light will brighten as you approach a cue point, and once you pass the cue, the white light will light up and dim as you move further away.

when you reach either end of the tape, the respective directional light will brighten, but will never pass as you’ve reached the end of the tape. in this case, the yellow light should come on and stay on when you reach the start of the tape

I had a similar problem with one I bought secondhand that it was unresponsive - lights were on, but wouldn’t function (someone was selling it off super cheap as a result).

What worked for me was downloading the ISO file from the Whimsical Raps github, and using Balena Etcher to burn it to a new SD card.
W/ powered up fine and now works a treat!
