Wow! Captain midi is a friend of Norns, no doubt about it!!!

Midi notes and triggers and clock from awake into the modular, then modular LFOs back in to awake to wiggle the pan and feedback delay parameters in awake. This is wild! Can’t wait to wrap my head around trying to run multiple midi tracks from orca out to vcos, and LFOs to wiggle softcut params coming back in.

Hello!(my first post here )
I’ve just wanted to share my discovery.
Don’t get me wrong, crow is probably a great module, but if you have O_c you can use it as usbMidi-CV interface.
All you need to do is:

  1. Flash alternative firmware github.com/Chysn/O_C-HemisphereSuite
(There are no original modes, but there are others, the module is divided in half - I recommend it for small systems.)
  2. You don’t need to recalibrate
  3. Pick MidiIn app and choose channel and pick which midi messages you want to convert to cv (or trig/gate)
  4. Plug usb cable to teensy at the back of module and connect it to norns
  5. Norns (my norns-shield) sees it as “Hemisphere Suite”
  6. I’ve tested it with Awake and it works great.

It’s a good observation. In many ways they are similar devices. They’re different ways of running code. If you’re looking to write your own code, crow is much easier to get started with than Hemisphere (though I think Hemisphere’s code is very easy to make sense of and have considered a few apps myself). And Hemisphere obviously has a UI!

Isn’t this possible with any midi-to-CV device, including ansible?

Plug usb cable to teensy at the back of module and connect it to norns

Just a word of caution: be very careful around that micro-USB port on the back of the module, particularly when reshuffling modules in your rack, tugging on the cable, etc. That port is fragile and prone to snapping off quite easily. Ask me how I know! sob

and if you have a busted usb port Teensy 3.2 sitting around - let me know. I can use em.

Can any of the applets be used as a straight up gate to trigger converter? I know several of them output triggers so I’m wondering if there is a way to misuse one of them to do gate to trigger conversion. I’m away from my modular at the moment so I can’t test it out but could output 2 of the AD envelope be used this way with minimum attack and decay settings? Would the trigger sequencer also work for this?

could you use something like this?

Burst is a burst generator based loosely on the Ladik S-075.

Controls

Digital Ins: Digital 1 is an optional timing clock, and Digital 2 triggers the bursts
CV Ins: CV 1 sets the Number of bursts and CV 2 is bi-polar modulation of the Spacing
Outputs: Output 1 is a series of 2ms triggers, and Output 2 is a gate that remains high while a series of bursts is in progress
Encoder Push: Move cursor between Number and Spacing
Encoder Turn: Update Number (1-12) and Spacing (8ms-500ms) settings. If Burst is clocked (see below), and the cursor is on Spacing, then clocked is turned off.

Haven’t tried it myself, but if it triggers on high rising edge, and you set the number to 1 and spacing to 8ms, it should work?

Yeah this was the other applet I was looking at. I’m not sure how it will respond to a gate but it’s worth a try! As I mentioned in the euro thread I’m looking to slim down so I’m seeing if Hemisphere can take the place of the ladik s-187 trigger/gate delay. Hemisphere will already do gate delays and I think I can do trigger to gate conversion with an envelope and a comparator (or with one channel of Maths) but I’m still missing a simple gate to trigger converter.

A channel of ClockDiv with the /1 setting is probably the most drama-free gate-to-trigger converter. Burst will certainly work. TrigSeq16 will also do the trick, but with repeating patterns.

@chysn I got an O_C yesterday, flashed it with Hemisphere today, and I’m blown away. It takes the module from awesome to absolutely amazing! Also finding it more intuitive and easier to use than stock.

Thank you very much for all the hard work you have, and continue to put into this. Do you accept donations?

@auditorycanvas, thank you, you’re very kind.

I do not ask for donations to myself because I like to keep my tax returns simple

However, when people ask about donations, I ask them to consider donating the same amount to Planned Parenthood, if it aligns with your values. If not, then toward doing good in your community, as you see fit. Thanks again!

This is very exciting! Are there any extra steps needed for 2OC installation & Buchla voltage support? I’m using the 1.5 revision of the 2OC.

Thanks!

I did a few modifications for 2OC, which are in the config file. Like, there’s a way to specify which half of a 2OC you’re installing it on so that the buttons work properly, and the trigger voltage has been modified for Buchla.

I couldn’t do all that much because I don’t have a Buchla system. Hopefully someone can take what I’ve done and run with it. I’m sure the MIDI quantizer is off, and voltage ranges are certainly not quite right. I’m pretty sure no negative voltages are getting in, though.

Is there a manual for HS v1.8 ? I only see 1.7 currently available.

Yes, the manual is always kept up to date. It is here:

Thanks! Yes, what I meant to ask is if there’s a PDF version. I know it’s being updated all the time and maybe a PDF version isn’t possible. I’d love to see smart phone app like Thomas Burns’ Synth Modes which covers the default O_C firmware.
Just trying to keep you busy !
I’ve just loaded it. I’ve had two O_Cs for a couple years so putting HS on one was a no brainer.
Thanks to all for this deep mofo.

That would be great. Anyone in touch with Burns and could make the request to add Hemisphere?

Hi everyone:)
I was wondering if it was possible to use Captain MIDI of Ornaments & Crime / Hemisphere to shoot trigger + gate and then use the NORNS sequencers towards the modular (like crow).
Below the cheat-sheet + the url of the application in github.

Here: Captain MIDI specs.

Norns works great with Captain MIDI, that’s been my main usage of O&C/Hemisphere the last couple of months.
