thank you glad you like it. yeah for sure i’d be happy to explain it. i made this using all the wonderful max for live devices by @dan_derks.

first, i put the “command” device on one midi track. then, on another midi track, i put the “jf synth device” this allows crow to control just friends polyphonically using i2c. the octatrack is sending midi to ableton using a mio midi to usb cable. this is what is creating the sequence of chords from just friends. at one point in the video i am playing the octatrack triggers like a midi keyboard on top of the sequence the octatrack is already sending to the “jf synth” device. just really playing with the amazing new unlocked polyphony.

i loaded the max for live device “ins” on to my third midi track. this allows for crow to receive cv from your eurorack and use that cv to control whatever you want in your computer. i used it to sequence and play kaivo ( an amazing physical modeling vst plugin by madrona labs ) with my marbles ( a eurorack sequencer ). kaivo is where all the “harp” sounds are coming from. i sent the cv / gate outs of marbles in to the two respective inputs on crow. cv controlling pitch. gate triggering midi notes.

finally i used two “outs” devices on a single midi track. the outs device has a four useful utilities (pitch / clock / lfo / offset ) that you can control using max for live and assign to one of crows four outputs. i assigned a clock to output 1 to clock marbles ( my sequencer in this case ) and an lfo out of output 2 to modulate three sisters cutoff frequency.

octatrack midi sequence -> mio midi usb cable -> “jf synth” max for live device in ableton -> i2c via crow -> just friends

marbles cv pitch -> crow input 1 -> “ins” max for live device - > kaivo pitch

marbles gate - > crow input 2 -> “ins” max for live device - > kaivo gate

“outs” max for live device clock - > crow output 1 - > clock input marbles

“outs” max for live device lfo - > crow output 2 - > cutoff frequency
three sisters

here are the screenshots of my setup in ableton. i’m at work away from my synthesizer so the i/o tab in ableton won’t be correct however the max for live devices are all setup exactly as i had them.

This is amazing, my mind is officially blown!

One question, in this signal path:

octatrack midi sequence -> mio midi usb cable -> jf synth device in ableton -> i2c -> just friends

Is the “jf synth device in ableton -> i2c“ flowing over the usb from Ableton to crow?

So is it “jf synth device in ableton (via usb) -> crow i2c output to jf”?

thanks!!!

correct ! it is octatrack sending midi -> midi to usb cable -> jf synth device receives midi via usb - > crow takes midi and sends is to jf via i2c

the 4ms Pods are easy to make modules fit in if you feel the hole are slightly off. since it is just bent aluminum you can just squeeze it closed a little more or push it open.

crow resources page is now up. You can also find it linked on the crow home page.

Since docs are now more open, anyone can add appropriate resources to this page!

just an informal poll here to see what people are primarily using with their crow:

  • m4l
  • druid
  • norns

I anticipate using Druid and m4l in approximately equal doses, once I get both understood…

Too early for me to vote meaningfully. I imagine it’ll be Druid as time proceeds, but we’ll see.

Live coding with Druid! I want to use it together with tidal cycles but I haven’t figured out how to go about it yet.

Max standalone for me.

I’m starting out with druid, but plan on introducing norns later. I wanted to see what crow is capable of on its own before adding the complexity of interfacing with norns

as stated above
too early to vote properly

m4l seems most fleshed out (especially with derwyd included) so i plan to try that first

norns seems easiest to setup so will probably try awake next

however long term i think i’ll use druid and norns simultaneously

Will there be anyway to do this in Bitwig? Or will this primarily stay an Ableton thing because of the m4l devices.

Very cool!

Thank you! These particular devices are max for live specific. Though I’m sure that bitwig - > max - > crow is totally doable and would probably be an awesome combination.
