Hey! Yea, I got the tapes a couple of days ago. Ended up sounding pretty good! The best part was the quick turnover - I got the tapes a little over a week after I ordered them. My only quelm is that the download cards are outrageously expensive - around $100. I will print my own instead.

Ah awesome! I’ll give them a shot. Did you have to pay customs on the package?

I didn’t have to end up paying, but I am in Japan. Yea, try em out!

Hey y’all,
Anyone figured out a cost effective US -> EU shipping method for a single cassette tape? USPS First Class cost $14 to ship one to Italy. I wonder if anyone’s tried FedEx, UPS, DHL or something else they’d recommend for that?

I’ve seen a lot of US tape people complaining about the costs to send a tape internationally so you’re not alone. I don’t know why it’s so expensive, it costs me $5 to send a tape UK->US

I tried to work out a better distribution system for low turnover, low run tapes but none of the models seem to work

Who are you using to send UK->US? Royal mail seems to come out at approx $7.50 for me (£5)

Went with mobineko for the first two cassette releases on my new label. Hope all the hard work pays off!

Royal Mail is £3.30 for me to send a tape to the US as a large letter, weight < 100g

Oh great! i haven’t had my tapes delivered yet, thought they’d weigh a bit more than that. Excellent thanks!

Muzan Editions, the label I do design for and co-curate has been using Mobineko for the last couple of batches. We have to pay tax/customs fees when the boxes arrive here in Japan if it’s a big order, so that’s a drag. Plus on one order, we got a bunch of lemons, so labelmate Andreas had to run quality control checks for the lot. Must have been a newbie at the controls that day…the shell colours are limited, and the shell printing isn’t as nice nor do you get the variety of colours that other pressing plants can give you-- they use UV printing—-BUUUUT— beyond all that, they’re friendly and fast and quick to respond to any problems we’ve had and the sound quality is good. Looked into getting stuff duped in the States and Canada, but man alive, the shipping… (more on that in a moment)

I usually print and fold and number the J-cards myself, but we are doing a round of 4 re-presses so I turned the printing of 2 titles over to Mobinkeo as a litmus test. They just arrived in Osaka and I can’t wait to see what they look like, in terms of print quality, paper stock, etc…will have a look on the weekend!

Also - I want to echo a bunch of people’s gripes about USPS shipping rates. It’s a HUUUGE bummer for us international folk when the shipping price for one tape is sometimes double that of the tape itself. If I’m ordering a batch of three, it’s cost-efficient, but otherwise— sheesh. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve fallen in love with a great release on a small label I want to support but I simply can’t swing it if one $7 tape ends up costing me a grand total of $20-plus to get to me. I usually end up paying for the significantly cheaper download instead as a compromise if I can’t find it via any distros here in JP… It’s not the artist’s or label’s fault, of course! It’s just a shame, and that goes for things like vinyl, merch like shirts pins and such as well.

Yep, I dropped some off at the local record store this morning and started talking to the owner about this–his suggestion was to try to convince a record store overseas to stock a handful/mail-order out to people in the EU.

I’ve bought a few tapes, records, and modules from the UK and Germany, and shipping to the US is more reasonable.

Bandcamp’s pay-what-you-want has led to a few people purchasing the tapes/digital copies of my record more than the “break even when factoring in production and design work” price I set. I’m thinking about lowering international shipping once things equalize a bit.

It’s good in theory, but it seems quite hard to get someone to do it. A friend managed to get one place to stock a cassette re-issue he put out, but he said most places just don’t do it.

It also means that some of your stock is tied up in Europe, which if you’re doing small runs may not be a good thing

I think this is the http://unitedcassettes.com model, which has local distributers if you want to check them out.

Hey dermo, if you want to get a better feel for how the Mobineko tapes end up looking, I just put the ones I got produced there up for sale.

Cheers!

Ordered, this music sounds ace! What instruments did you use to make it?

I am actually on my way out of a pretty nasty exchange with mobineko regarding my own labels tape orders… I will definitely not be using them again in the future.

Hey, thanks for ordering a tape! Really appreciate it! Sorry, I should have made this clearer, but this is actually a release on my label and not my own music. This is Takahiro Mukai, who is based in Osaka. I could definitely ask what instruments he used for you! The tapes I ordered (from Cryptic Carousel) with my own music will go on sale this week, however, and I can post a link for you if you’re interested.

If you don’t mind me asking, what happened with Mobineko? Actually, I was just about to order more tapes from them, so your story may persuade me not to.

i’ll PM you 20characters

Do tell! We keep wondering what odd surprise/inconsistency we’ll get from Mobi next time…

@standard_grey The vast majority of two of our tape runs were super right-heavy on the B side and had awful sound quality in terms of low/high frequency content. Beyond that the back and forth with our assigned customer service rep was pretty poor, and we’re currently waiting on a refund.

For anyone interested, I eventually got a refund from Mobineko for the tapes we returned, so that’s something. Took several heated emails. Annoyingly they never owned up to the issue and accused us of trying to swindle them. Definitely avoiding from now on.

Going to try bandcds.co.uk next time, I noticed they do full cassette coverage printing and that one of the recent opal tapes releases had that so hopefully they are decent!

Anyone in the UK recommend a place for J-Card printing? Infinitely Duplication have closed down so I’m trying Fairview. The tape sound good but they’ve messed up the printing*, so looking around for somewhere that can print the J-Cards separate.

*simple B&W design came out very dark, and with a blue tint. I sent a revised file in the format they requested and am being told it’s corrupt. It isn’t.

made good experiences with bandcds. very friendly and transparent communication. also, they seem to constantly up their game in terms of equipment. they now have a UV LED printer for full on-body cassette printing, which is pretty cool.

-edit- okay, that’s probably what you meant by full coverage printing. nevermind …
-edit- and now realising that i reply to a 4 months old message. i’m a mess.
