I like lots of unique random sources for most parameters in a patch. Take a simple “mono synth” type patch with a single square wave from one VCO into a filter then into a VCA. Envelopes to VCA and VCF.

I like patching a stepped random (S&H) into the PWM of the square/pulse that’s triggered by each note in sequence. I like all stepped changes to be ‘per note’ rather than constantly clocked changes. So each new key press or active sequence step will give a new random value. I’d then do the same for the filter cut off and resonance with two more unique stepped values. These would all be heavily attenuated. But it gives a lot of movement and life / humisation to a patch.

The next step would be using a VCA between the envelope modulation and the filter. Bias/open the VCA to where I like the envelope depth to be but then add some attenuated modulation to the VCA too. So that also changes how deep the envelope it.

Then do the same to some time or shape parameters on the envelopes modulating the filter and VCA.

So you have tonal changes on the pulse and filter, envelope depth on the filter changing, and enveloep shapes and times changing. Lots of attenuation / attenuverters (if not on the modules) is key to getting the most of it. But lots of subtle bits of random works great.

My other take on this is using lots of smooth sources on similar parameters so things just drift a bit, different vibe but also very nice.

In Live I use a maxforlive device randomiser on various plugins, it usually sounds horrendous - then i spend time un-weirding it, disabling randomisation and automations til it sounds (ideally) interesting but listenable. @TheTechnobear 's orac allows for a lot of experimentation and random pairing of modules which is fun. Cool topic.

I haven’t grasped what’s going on when I use Wogglebug yet and I don’t know if I fully appreciate my results neither. But the good thing about randomness is that it’s not my fault :wink:

This little patch is created from a short sample from “Bob the Bob” with The Lounge Lizards in Morphagene getting tweaked by Wogglebug, Rings and E330 are trying to play along with a 16 step sequence from Voltage Block and the CV out from Morphagene is clocking the whole thing.

Agree with all of this, the other thing I like to is attentuated random on a VCable envelope. Typically the decay portion.

Not sure it means much, although it was Tom Hall’s video with the Nebulae from Qu-Bit and the 16 fader bank that brought me here. Although I’m really into the little module “Nearness” that originated through here too.

Yeah the CV over shape/time in the VCable envelope portion I mention. I feel like all the random sources are just “life” or “liveliness” and it’s worth exploring them on most parameters in subtle amounts.

A little 2 minute diary using all 3 of the topic headers.

Accident - was discovering a mix of Shapeshifter chorded fed into a frequency shifter that gave up a nice rhythmic beat frequency kind of pulse.

Chance - feeding this pulsing audio into a comparator to derive a slightly unreliable gate pattern made even more so by using it to clock one channel of Stages set with variable amounts of multiplication and using this to trigger Plonk and to clock a Nanorand

Random - using the output of the Nanorand to bend the pitch of the Plonk percussion voice. Overall the effect that emerged was something similar to a bodhran.

Agree with DivKid in that attenuation is always randoms friend. It’s often just a touch of variation in the tiny details that lift a patch into something that has real life to it. The subtleties that you don’t notice are there but you know when they are not there.

I have a Nearness. It’s cool.

This technique reminds me of a technique I read about when 3D modelling: Starting with a clean symmetrical model, push and pull points until it’s distorted, then try to put everything back by hand and you end up with something much more organic. Breaking a preset with the randomiser then fixing it by hand seems like the musical equivalent of this. Definitely going to give that a go myself!

If any of my fellow TT nerds feels up to it, I’d love to see a CHAOS operator featured in a small scene.

In almost all of my patches I use the Wogglebug’s random CV outputs and a randomizer Ardcore sketch to ‘humanize’ the sound somehow. Even very slight random variations to parameters like envelope length, filter cutoff, etc have a significant psychological effect.

I agree with zebra’s take upthread that it is tempting to just leave this stuff in, but ultimately it makes for less satisfying listening. What I end up doing is recording various parts in takes and choosing the ones where the randomness lines up the most neatly. Alternately, if I hear some random interaction or movement that is particularly pleasing, I’ll try to find a way to engineer that deliberately, and often discover something new along the way.

Ultimately, though, I struggle with chance and randomness, because my personality likes to be in control. Having worked with computers my entire life I have the built in feeling that “undo” is right there, or that “perfect” is attainable (which, in the digital sense, it is). This tendency is a bit of a hindrance to creativity; the part of my mind that wants to put things in order fights with the part that can appreciate the aesthetics of asymmetry and disorder. Right now, the former part is more agile and well-trained than the latter, but with practice the balance seems to be shifting.

Personally, I make really vanilla music with melodies and harmonies and everything is decided before I record. I use randomness just for my own amusement more than anything. For example, I like vibrato to randomly be much faster on certain notes, occasionally. A listener would have to be paying attention very hard to notice. but I have fun and that’s what counts

so mostly it’s my CGS psycho LFO and sample and hold modules for stuff like that

does anyone have recommendations for note probability in ableton / a max for live device that will give me note probability for incoming midi note data?

i’m aware of the velocity probability within ableton, but i’m looking for purely skipped note probability that retains the original velocity of the midi note. i have elektron devices that achieve this, but i’m looking for a solution purely ITB.

You should be able to do this with the ‘random’ midi device.
I am not near my computer so I can’t test, but this is how I would do it:
Put a random device on your chain and set the chance as you want it, choices to 1 and scale to max.
Wrap your instrument/vst/whatever in a group (instrument rack) and set the note range for the chain to include the midinotes you want but not the super high notes generated by random (should be several octaves above.
If you need per note probability you can automate the chance in the clips.

This M4L device should do what you’re after. I haven’t used it for a while but I’m pretty sure it preserves velocity data and just uses the usual Max approach to note probability.

I’ve really been getting more mileage out of my random lately. So much so that despite owning a Wogglebug, I snagged a Ultra Random Analog when one came up used and I’m currently using almost every output whenever I patch which has me thinking, should I offload these two and buy a Sapel? Save some space and by the looks of it, increase function and number of random outputs? Any Sapel users able to push me over the edge? (won’t take much)

I was following several threads and video on the Krell patch. Fluctuating random voltage seems to be a key element. I have a S&H module(Tromso) a Turing machine (2HP TM) a Doepfer 149-1, Maths…
The deeper although a model after the Buchla SOC does not have fluctuating random. Is there a way to use the Tromso S&H and my maths to slew and create a fluctuating random? What exactly is the voltage like from fluctuating random?

simply put, the analog noise is S+H’d by randomly timed pulses and then slewed. the average timing of the random sampling is voltage controlled, and the same control also affects the slew rate proportionally.

Amazing topic, thanks a lot! Learned a lot with the attenuator technique for random modules.

Variable degrees of randomness are central in my process.

A friend is building semi-modulars synths for us and we designed a very wild, random-based/generative unit. There´s a random module (with non-linear variation and velocity) with cool intermodulations, a weird sample & hold (“hample & sold”) and a dedicated bass osc variation for further randomness. A photo of it:

I´m using it basically for drones - the 3+1+1+1 oscillators (some of them transistor based :)) through El Capistan have a eerie, mantric sound. It´s based in MFOS circuits (if i´m not wrong) and is operating with a slightly below the recommended battery voltage, provoking further fluctuations.

Really nice, even if limited - there´s no external cv in/out, just inner modulations.

At the moment my favorite machine with random capabilities is the OP-Z, which I´m using for instrumental hop hop. It´s very, very fast to sequence a beat and turn it upside down with all the random and generative glory of the step components.

The trigger spark and component spark in random mode (“9”) are my basic generative structure which I usually combine with the random one. This combination is amazing for textures, percussive and small samples - even better now with the new sampling capabilities of the OP-Z, with the variable slice size per step + LFO in the Reverse parameter per step!.

For even more jazzy results I use the ramp up and down components and the velocity. When I´m looking for extreme glitch/retriggers I also use the pulse and pulse hold (both in random) and the jump components, sometimes variating in real time the sequence length.

The delay fx, although not sounding specially lush, is also nice for an extra groove.

Oh! And you can randomize all the parameters with a combo - an welcome addition to the Digitone, by the way.

And talking about it, I have a techno Digitone live full of conditional trigs and S&H LFO randomness. The degree of sound control that you have in the DN is impressive and the recent additions (specially the ratio offsets <3) made it even better - although to be honest, I´m using it´s random capabilities much more for my drums/percussive sounds.

I was using with some acid synths but now that I finally managed to find an acid sweet spot in some patches (and the new portamento/glide capabilities of the DN) I´m using it alone, which will free me to do the MIDI feedback tricks to have even more LFOs modulating everything - my next investigation! :slight_smile:
