Do you have a link to the curly cable (or any shorter cable for DT770s)? The regular one is far too long for my general usage, but I couldn’t find any compatible shorter ones on the spare parts site

I found the curly cable on their site, but it was sold out.

Does it look to be the same as this one on Thomann? Bit expensive but would be lovely to have a pre-coiled cable

Maybe a little off topic but I can’t find a more relevant one. Does anyone know of a small headphone limiter so I don’t accidentally blow my ears up whilst playing live?

Anyone have any recs for good in ear headphones? Hauling around my DT770s are a little too much for travel.

They are expensive, but I absolutely love my Sony IER-M9 iem’s. Easily the best sounding headphones of any style that I’ve used, and very comfortable for a non-custom iem. Highly recommended.

I got Sennheiser IE80S for in-ear and feel like they’re pretty comfortable and, to your point, nice to have a compact solution for some situations. I’ll never LOVE in-ears, but these sound pretty damn good.

My favorite in ears these days have been the Tin Audio T2. At about 30-40$ (depending on AliExpress vendor) it’s hard to recommend them highly enough for clarity and details if sub bass isn’t a priority. Not sure why they haven’t tackled the full size headphone market as intensively, but the boutique Chinese IEM and earbuds manufacturers have been incredibly impressive over the last few years…

Shure SE215 is very nice for the price IMHO. Not the most neutral ones, but very nice and easy to get used to type balance, block noise relatively well, and the included setseems to include a decently fitting ear plug for most.

The SE series has replaceable / removable cables as well… which is a big plus if you either treat your gear roughly, or happen to own a cat. I bought a pair for s.o. for evening listening, and we’re on our third set of cables now due to the furry terrorist eventually chewing through every sufficiently delicious-looking cable.

I have used a pair of Superlux HD688Bs for a few years. They are super comfortable (once the original vinyl padding is replaced with velour), sound like they should cost at least 4x what they actually do, and have been completely reliable for me.

Recently I found myself needing more isolation, and I thought about going for DT770, but wound up with German Maestro GMP-8.35 D. After an initial few hours of getting used to closed-back headphones again, I find I really love them. There is indeed a lot more isolation than the semi-open HD688Bs, but I feel like I’m hearing more (or at least different) detail now too.

Etymotic ER-4SR - totally clean/transparent

Sennheiser HD-25. They are very light and easy to travel (left & right speakers are removable from the main body). They are very comfortable after many hours of use.
They are highly recommended for location recording - Chris Watson also suggest them.
Generally I try to avoid headphones and for mixing I use speakers but for general use or those occasions where I travel and stay to some friends/remote houses -where the rooms are not so quite- I always carry them with me. I would not compare them with Sennheiser-650 or Beyerdynamic DT990 for critical listening but their quality/portability factor is very high.

Currently I’m mainly using the Sennheiser 650 versions sold by drop / massdrop. They’re very good for the price, there’s a choice of earcup covering depending on what you like, and I find I can reasonably well hear details to make careful editing decisions. The Focals I had before were a bit more revealing in the high end, but quite a bit less comfortable overall and less mechanically sound. I never got along with the beyerdynamics (though have friends who swear by em), and find sony 750X to be uncomfortable and shrill.

Another relatively portable option is the KRK KNS 8400. They do not fold but you can rotate the cups to make them flat enough, and they’re pretty good headphones. I’m actually using mine almost all day now that I have a proper home workspace and I don’t get tired at all (though your mileage may vary).

Interesting - I didn’t know KRK made headphones! I’ve got to try these - I’m a longtime fan of KRK monitors because of a complete lack of ear fatigue (for me).

Thanks for pointing these out!

I have a pair of Fischer Audio FA 4E XB for out and about listening, great response for general listening. I use Hifiman Planars for more critical listening at home.

I second :

  • HD25 in the field, for location recording it’s perfect
  • DT770 for editing on the DAW and recording in the studio
  • HD 650 to listen to some music

Another league but just to say that I bought the Beyerdynamic Soul Byrd and I’m quite happy with it. I wanted something to take everyday and to work with. There are great headphones with a nice stereo image, affordable, and not intrusive at all ( the big plus for me ) and isolation isn’t too high ( I need to heard what’s around me at work ).

I got a pair of Beyer Dynamic DT770 80ohm based on the experiences of people in this thread. I had some doubts before buying them and I want to address these.

  • Glasses / spectacles are not an issue. The padding is so soft I hardly feel a difference.
  • Big ears is not an issue. I’ve got quite big ears and they fit without any issues
  • 80ohms works fine on my laptop’s headphone output as well as on my Android phone. Perfect for work and play.
  • The wire is quite long and the headphone is quite big and not fold-able. Not an issue for me since I plan on using it at my desk.
  • I was surprised how light the headphone feels. It also fits snugly on my head without too much pressure.
  • Be careful while inserting into a 3.5" output. The plug cannot be fully inserted. It’s not really an issue just something to be aware of.
  • I can imagine the headphone to be a bit warm in the summer, but for now it doubles nicely as ear warmers

All in all I’m quite pleased with it at the moment. I’ll see if I can do an update after using it for some time.

I still use my cheap AKG K-141m 600ohm headphones on a daily basis. I’ve replaced the cushions several times but other than that they just keep working. Bought them 18 years ago I think. I know their sound inside and out by now so it’s really pleasing to make music with them.
