Disquiet Junto Project 0268: Walking Music
Take a stroll and describe it in sound, paying tribute to the late manga great Jiro Taniguchi.
Step 1: This week’s project pays tribute to Jiro Taniguchi, the great Japanese manga creator whose numerous works include an adaptation of a Natsume Sōseki novel, dark crime stories, and a widely celebrated and largely dialog-free volume titled The Walking Man. The Walking Man in particular is the inspiration for this week’s Junto project. Taniguchi died on February 11, 2017, at the age of 69.
Step 2: Take a leisurely stroll and record — whether through sound or observation, or both – what you see and experience.
Step 3: Create a short piece of music that reflects the route and experiences of your walk in Step 2.
Five More Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Upload: When participating in this project, post one finished track with the project tag, and be sure to include a description of your process in planning, composing, and recording it. As mentioned in my track description (on the SC link) I have been out walking each day this week making recordings for a film soundtrack I am working on. Today in Essex on the Thames path near the QE2 bridge then along to Thurrock and the bird sanctuary and walked under the electric pylons pictured with the track. It was a pleasant surprise when I drove home and read my emails from Disquiet Junto. I thought about the pylons and the humming electric wires. Somehow it felt more real slowing the recording of the pylons down and giving it some EQ. It sometimes feels like Field Recording could take over my life!
Even at 98 Rocky Balboa still keeps a strict physical exercise routine. While he is no longer able to do one handed push ups he is still able to shadow box and gets in 2 miles of road work everyday. Asked how he is able to keep it up at his age he cheekily replied “Viagra”.
In my mind I went back to 1989, where I took a midnight walk in the Abbey of St.Bernard. I grew up in Hemiksem(Belgium), where we could play(read as:“get high, low and anything in between”) in an old Abbey. Man, I could tell you stories! But what happened in the Abbey, stays… It used to be this old ruin and in the dark pretty scary where we could do whatever we wanted to do… I loved this place.
I was working with sounds(from Noiiz), for the weekly Naviar Haiku-challenge, but the sounds didn’t really work with what I had in mind and then this weeks Junto-mail came in… the sounds fit perfect!
Not much to tell about the process, I took 7 or 8 samples and put them together, no manipulation going on except some fade in/out.(maybe a little speed changing, I already forgot)

Disquiet Junto Project 0268: Walking Music
I revisited a piece I recorded two years ago for this weeks project as it’s an improbably good fit. The original track was recorded after taking a walk along a gravel path in a park in Melbourne during winter, reminiscing about winter strolls through parks in Japan.
The track consists of three simple partial-chord sequences which repeat over different durations, creating accidental overlaps, near collisions and harmonies. Each section is fed into a chain of effects to create a responsive background shimmer. It also features a field recording of children playing after school in Inokashira Park in Mitaka, western Tokyo, Japan, in late November 2010. I made the recording after an afternoon visit to the Ghibli Anime Studio museum located in the park.
The original has been remixed and remastered.
In 3 minutes I walk through a day: night, morning, the day, a rain storm late in the day, and ending with night. I’m walking on a gravel trail, pitched slightly down. The other sounds you hear were recorded from my screened porch. The music inserted is “A Short Walk Inside” from my 2013 album Crackle And Drift.
Today there were opportunities to record walking and I tried a few but the results were inconclusive.
Then this evening I was sitting at the pool and had the idea to film wet footprints. The way the water sprays off feet and onto the path has often fascinated me.
I like to imagine that I have giant chicken feet.
At home I experimented with different instruments and treatments. Then on a whim I tried adding a recording from last week and the drums started just right and set it off.
Here I’m accompanied by electric bass and toothbrushes.

Suss Müsik recalls reading an interview with Ryuichi Sakamoto, another Japanese legend who had a strong affinity for walking. Sakamoto mentioned his dislike for automobiles and admitted that he had never driven a car in his life; however, he enjoyed the sounds that cars make while in operation.
Walking is a solitary activity that lends itself to mind expansion. We rarely concentrate on the destination or even the process of getting somewhere. Rather, we remain lost in our own thoughts as images and sounds blend into the background, superseded by the bitter noise within.
For this short, quiet piece, Suss Müsik consciously investigated “the space between” while walking. A simple piano motif replicates the heavy, soft footsteps we heard during our nocturnal stroll: thalum-thum, thalum-thum. In the background is the sampled sound of a distant train, manipulated beyond recognition, which accents the phased piano.
A strange thing occurs just after the two-minute mark, where it sounds as if nothing is happening even though the mix appears rather busy. That moment operates, perhaps, as a metaphor for how the mind travels while not thinking of anything in particular.
The piece is titled Mawaru, a Japanese word meaning to “wander about.” It can also mean to feel dizzy. The image is the rear plate of a plastic timepiece — we liked the little arrows.
walking…walking…walking… my track:
This contribution to Disquiet Junto Project 0268 was a not-entirely leisurely stroll that started at my front door and ended up at the top of the cliff overlooking Pukerua Bay towards Kapiti Island. Today it was raining so the island was obscured by clouds. You can hear me opening the front door, then an umbrella, then the front gate. I walked up to the next street and then into the bush. From there its about another five or six minutes upwards under the dark canopy of trees to emerge on the cliff top.
This happens to be the place where Peter Jackson filmed various scenes of his first movie “Bad Taste”, where aliens come to earth to eat humans. I have never experienced anything like that myself. I was wearing my new Pink Pussy Hat, sent to me from Eva, my new pen-pal in Miami. Solidarność!
My submission to the Disquiet Junto project this week was recorded entirely on location in Norwich, England.
It’s made up of elements of a lunchtime walk through the market place and into Marks and Spencer’s.
The original recording was one long take, but for the mix I selected the elements I liked and then laid them over a foundation of the sound of me walking through the Royal Arcade where you can hear the footsteps of a woman who was following me.
Once I was happy with the mix I duplicated the whole thing and then off set it by about a second reducing the volume to give a delayed echo effect that really comes into its own when you hear the footsteps echoing around the Royal Arcade towards the end before we eventually emerge onto the aptly named Gentleman’s Walk.

On most days I take a walk through the woods near my house, which normally takes about forty-five minutes. I listen to music as I walk but decided to remove the headphones while slowly walking over the bridge.
As I listened to the quiet, which was intermittently broken by birds in the distance, branches and leaves blowing as the wind picked up and died down, and the water flowing below, the ear of my mind added memories of a time to come when the woods wake up and show life in their fullest.
This is that short but slow walk across the bridge.

Two weeks in a row!
Yesterday was a day that I had to travel into London from my rural English home and as someone who prefers to walk than take public transport when I get there, this was my kind of project.
I sampled the walk to and from Waterloo Station across Waterloo Bridge using the only recorder I had charged (my iPhone) using both the standard recorder but also Trippy Replay app to start the DSP nice and early in the process.
Once I had transferred the files, it was a case of sampling the more melodic elements over the vanilla field recording (with plenty of wind noise unfortunately). The goal was to create a fairly complex sound field to represent the busy road. There is a nod to the original Waterloo Sunset in terms of the arpeggios used …
Hi everybody, here’s my track.
‘lacrimosa dies illa’ - I had a little cat named Beauté. She also died last week.
Improvised on my modular synth. Inspired by walking through the rain in NYC, listening and watching the drops hit different objects in the environment, getting stronger over time.
Main sounds come from 4ms SMR and ALM Akemie’s Taiko.
Sequenced using Monome Ansible - Meadowphysics and Kria. Improvised and recorded live.
The rain lends itself really well to falling patterns in Meadowphysics…
Wassort of ambivalent about participating this week (for all sorts of transient reasons), but while out for my morning walk I was really noticing the birds and cars and such.
I was inspired to make a field recording and add some solo bass and submit something.
