It seems Intellijel have quietly launched their passive LPG 1U (or I missed the ruckus).

Wow, interesting to see a manufacturer going toward vactrols instead of away from them.

yeah I’ve never been able to wrap my head around “vactrols are rare components, we can’t find enough” since there’s folks 3D printing them these days. I expect there’s something I’m missing.

It’s not availability, as I understand it. The first issue was that they are inconsistent in performance from one to the next, which can lead to customers always sending in units to “make them better”.

More importantly is their use of cadmium which raises tricky compliance issues:

You can see more context in this thread The end of vactrols

Basically the vactrols that used to be used in LPGs had a lot of cadmium in it. European law banned the sale of electronic equipment that exceeded the threshold of a certain amount of cadmium.

A few makers get around this with their LPGs by creating circuits that have a similar response to using a vactrol but with custom circuitry. Pittsburgh Modular and Rabid Elephant do this.

I’m not sure how Intellijel handles it, but the cost of this module probably means they found a compliant vactrol rather than using custom circuitry.

I ordered 2 of them to fill the remaining 12hp of 1U space in my Intellijel case.

I had no idea cadmium was historically involved, thanks @maztik8r & @hermbot for the links.

I don’t see anywhere whether these nice looking little 1U LPGs are DC coupled or not. I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t be. Are LPGs normally DC coupled?

All of the Make Noise LPGs I have are DC Coupled: Optomix, Dynamix, LxD, RxMx.

Thanks! I suspect that would be the norm.

But those are all powered, this one is passive. I could be mistaken, but I didn’t think it was possible to DC couple passive?

Edit: I happily stand corrected.

Good point.

Ctrl-Fing the manual for DC doesn’t bring anything up, and it only calls out the following:

“Any audio signal patched into here will be
gated by the voltage arriving at the CV IN [3]
jack, and sent to the LPG OUT [2] jack.”

Yes, it is DC coupled. The manual and web page will be updated to clarify.

Any other Morgasmatron owners out there? I’d be interested in hearing about some of your favorite ways to use it. I feel like this is one of those modules that I haven’t tapped it’s full potential yet.

Question on the intellijel 1U stereo in and out modules. My plan is to get both the stereo in and out modules, but I have two use cases in mind. One is the standard, use the outs as stereo out and the ins as a way to get mono or stereo signals in. My question is around the second, though. I want to use those two modules basically as a send/return for my zoia. Is it possible use one output to send a mono signal to a pedal, and one or both inputs to return the processed signal? I can control the dry/wet elsewhere, and then use the remaining output to output a mono signal? Is there bleed between the two stereo outputs/inputs, or can I use two distinct signals? Would there be any reason I’d need the specific pedal send (besides the dry wet control)?

You can definitely use them that way. The pedal send is for people who don’t need or want the dedicated in/out functionality. Also it can be used on the input jacks of a 7U case. So then if you are using the stereo out module for the L and R out jacks you can add a pedal IO and use the L and R in as the send and return. Many people told us they have no need for dedicated inputs and so this provides an alternative use for those jacks.

Awesome! Yup, I’m using them with the ins and outs on the 7U case (which I love btw :D). I was thinking that the stereo in and stereo out module would give me the most flexibility. I guess another alternative use would be to have the stereo out and the pedal io, and I can use the pedal io as just a mono in if I turn the knob all the way wet, right?

if you don’t need dedicated level controls, it looks like they just came out with a tiny passive 2x 1/8" module to access those jacks, which would leave you the maximum flexibility for minimum 1U space.

Anyone know if it would be possible to power a CV.OCD via the USB Power 1U and a Ripcord USB to 9V DC power cable (which is advertised as a compatible PSU for the CV.OCD on Reverb)?
