I’m in. I promise consistency in content, not in quality. I participated last year and found it to be incredibly valuable to force myself to post something every day: developing the stamina to focus on daily practice got me three EPs and got me to optimise and simplify the recording and sharing processes in ways that have paid off in the year since. More importantly, it taught me the value of sharing process and progress in ways that I’d forgotten.

It’s perfectly fine for things to be rough and ready, and it’s fine to not share things: there is value in participating. But I urge anybody to join in and share if they can, especially if they are unsure about the value of inflicting their art upon the world. I say this as somebody who has spent a lot of time hesitating about sharing work of mine. It’s nice to be able to share something and not to worry about it being “good”; you’ll be surprised what some people think is good when you do.

I liked using YouTube for this simply because it’s a widely supported platform that gives me 5000 characters to blather about what I’m doing each day if I feel like it, which is a handy reference for Future Me as much as an easter egg for the real heads. It’s also handy seeing the visual evidence of workflow changes over the course of the month. I’ll note from my own experience that video adds a whole other layer of messing around that you might not welcome when things get busy or stressful if video workflows aren’t second-nature for you. For what it’s worth, it gets easier with practice.

Well, here is my first submission. I struggled to get up today as I played a gig last night to see in the new year. I filmed the last 30 mins or so and this is a quick edit of all the tinkering, tapping and general racket making (‘jamming and experimenting’) in between the songs just prior to auld lang syne.I hope this ok to submit??? heheh. Explanation of Process

It took my around an hour to set up my gear on the living room floor, where it usually resides but had to go because of the holidays. More time was needed to fix some issues with cables and ground noise.

First I wanted to do a track with Animator but for some reason could not get a sound out of it, so I went for Barcode. I recorded some guitar into it and later played over the buffer. I had to do several takes because of “family noise”.

Finally had to settle for one because I had to leave for a little family excursion where I took a photo of a horse statue that I later based a drawing on. Tomorrow I will try to put more time into music making and less into preparations.

I don’t have a lot to say, like about concept, art, production, gear or anything really. Just jamming =} I go for 60 seconds. Today VCV was at hand because of ordering hype for later.

Good stuff everyone, and stuff is accumulating on social medias. Out with quality @informationsource althought that sounds interesting. Nice spaghetti for a start. @Nghttgr wow what an extreme milieu to jam on, at least from a total landlubbers perspective. @muncky slomo hands somehow suit the filtered, noisy music. @teletron good that you grabbed something from the very early moments of the year. @XHG good idea to use quite sparse starting material as barcode fills it up quick, @watercolor n-ice!. @Noisetrees your video+audio+drone concepts are really great, enjoyed them earlier years too. I miss snow!

Glad you enjoyed! My signal chain was EQD Organizer > Walrus Deep Six > Cooper FX Outward V2 > Chase Bliss Lossy > Chase Bliss Generation Loss > Walrus Lore > Fairfield Shallow Water. (Sorry for not posting it initially, completely slipped my mind.) In a nutshell, I have it set up for octave up into granular/tape into reverb.

Pretty pleased to have thrown something together for this, not sure I’m gonna be able to keep it up when the day job comes looms back into view in a few days.

But I’ve set myself a basic task of using each and every piece of gear I own in a piece before the month is out and anything that either doesn’t get used or I don’t enjoy using will be getting cleared out, I think that should be manageable even if a daily jam might not be.

First effort is centred on learning the new firmware for ioslabs flux, which I love but also it usually makes me feel like a fraud because I never really use its full capabilities. The new generative tools are really nice, but probably this would’ve been more coherent if I’d figured out how to exclude specific steps from the generative engine before rather than after I’d started recording. Also slathering my new Mood MK2 all over everything to get a feel for it. Still, feel like while the elements here don’t hang together … at all … there will be plenty to go back to and build upon over the rest of the year. Definitely an hour well spent.

Improvising with this hands-on setup. In this patch doing some rhythmic pinging and seeing what kinds of range is possible with just the filter and some modulation (that slips into audio rate at times) as the sound source. Got some amusing results and kind of funny sounds

I take a pretty structured approach to songwriting, and I get the sense that most people who do Jamuary just want to hear more of the same.

You wouldn’t know it from this moniker’s output but I come from a songwriting/composition background and found the liberation of the electronic music jam to be a well-fitting pair of boots. The good thing about time-constrained experiments is that one can leave them in the past if one wishes.

I happened to start into electronic music by making a drunken New Year’s resolution just over a decade ago to record 100 songs before my birthday, which is a bit over 100 days into the year. My standards for “song” slipped in the sober light of day, and ended up being demos in various forms and formats. About 20% of those sketches got polished and ended up on subsequent releases under a previous project of mine. I wouldn’t have ever found that 20% without trying it out!
