Sounds like a bug! I’ll log it in the tracker. Thanks for the report!

Just to add: At least for me, even when I type JF.MODE 0, Teletype still affects JF via I2C…

Which commands are you using? The only ones that shouldn’t work are JF.VOX, JF.NOTE and JF.TICK. The rest are supposed to work always.

JF.MODE just activates/deactivates Synthesis and Geode modes . It doesn’t disable I2c, or Run mode.

Okay, thanks! The part about the commands is normal, then.

One more observation: when I trigger JF in Synthesis mode from TT at audio rates (not that I’d actually want to do it that much), some JF notes hang.

learning my way through this wonderful module combo, still very new to teletype. one thing I wonder though - will a version without a distorted mix out ever be offered? a lot of times I love the sound, but other times I really wish I could reliably have things be nice and gentle and clean. I’m aware about mixing the separate outputs, but that can use up a lot of utility resources, for example I would hate to devote my cold mac just to mixing the JF outputs to avoid distortion.

Teletype’s JF.VTR will let you set the velocity for the channels, why not try that and see if you can get an undistorted mix out?

Ah yes, good call! Will try this out

3 posts were split to a new topic: Just Type: Explorations

Could someone clarify if when using Just Type in synthesis a second Just Friends (or any env gen i guess) will still take gates from a sequence/or live playing and generate the Envelopes/shapes for the JF in sound/synthesis?

If so, does this still work via cables from ansible?

Well, as usual the answer is “yes and no”. The official description is very clear on how Just Type works. Indeed, one can still use the gate inputs to trigger sounds (independently from the note values Teletype is assigning, in case that’s important—it would take some thought or typing to have the gates advance the sequence), and if you’re careful with your scripting you can even determine which inputs will correspond to which notes.

As mentioned in the link, in synthesis mode you get some control over the built-in envelope shaping, but it won’t really follow an external envelope generator. You could always run each output you’ll be using through its own VCA, but given my vague understanding of your setup that seems out of the question.

No synthesis, sequenced via Ansible/grid with gate shapes through a second JF then. Arhw too bad. Future music anyway (crow)
thanks as always!

we have > teletype : code exchange and > teletype: grid # code exchange
so perhaps > teletype : just type code exchange ?

Hi all,

I made a new thread Just Type: Explorations for videos/sounds, script & patch ideas, discussion of using Just Type.

Keeping this thread open for more technical questions on how it works, reporting issues, feature requests, and more general questions about the setup.

hi! i’m wondering about any further developments on this. having received my TT recently in geode i could never reach constant triggering on subsequent JF.VOX ops besides the 1st one. putting a DEL: 5 in front of them somewhat helps but the results are not consistent. synth mode seems to not skip any notes and i only have ER-301 and JF connected, no powered bus or backpack.

I’m having a minor bug: when sending CV to the intone jack in the Synthesis modes, I’m not getting any changes to the shape of the envelopes. The panel control still works, and the intone jack responds to CV in Geode and standard JF modes.

Anyone else experiencing this?
I’m gonna try to re-flash my firmware later.

Trying to understand the behavior I’m seeing when sending negative velocity values with JF.VTR, JF.VOX or JF.NOTE. I expected any negative value to be the same as sending a velocity of 0, but instead I see the following.

This is a new module (gold clouds) that I have just downloaded the v3.1.2 firmware to.

Just Friends is set to sound/transient, all knobs are at noon. Mix jack goes to audio output.

First, run JF.MODE 1 to enter synthesis mode. Then run e.g. JF.VTR 0 V -5. All generators trigger and continue to sound until a velocity is sent for that channel that is a) not zero and b) strictly greater than the velocity sent previously. For example running JF.VTR 0 + 1 V -5 next will release all channels (often with a slight pop), but JF.VTR 0 V -5 or JF.VTR 0 0 will not.

Sending more and more negative values with this command gets somewhat louder output up until about V -5, then gets quieter until JF.VTR 0 V -10 is silent.

In some cases after messing with this for a while I have become unable to get any output from the Mix jack (though individual channel outputs will still produce sound) until a power cycle.

Bit of an odd edge case but I tripped over this when sending negative velocities accidentally while scripting. I know it has been gushed about extensively at this point but this device is really something special, I cannot believe what I am hearing.

@csboling I never gave negative velocities consideration, so it’s certainly into undefined territory. I think my inclination is just to clamp them to zero as adding inverted waveforms would be a massive overhaul to the project given the way it’s implemented.

@Galapagoose as promised on Twitch chat, here’s some Geode bugs:

Symptom: Occasional missed JF.VOX triggers (1 or 2 misses per minute)
Replicate: Mode switch to Sustain, Metro @ 500ms, JF.TICK 4 every metro, JF.VOX 1 12 7 every 8 metros

Symptom: Crash JF
Replicate: As above, but mode switch to Cycle and negative CV to Run.
