… 3 month coding retreat, are you attending the Recurse Center? :open_mouth: :metal:

Probably not, it just struck me as an interesting possibility.

Indeed I am! Currently at the half-way point & having my my mind constantly blown every day. It’s truly a wonderful experience with a lot of energetic & smart people. A few weird projects on my github if you’re interested.

That’s awesome! Congratulations and happy hacking!

what’s this scatter app? judging by the atmel chip id, it looks like firmware for white whale or another trilogy module. but there’s a reference to an evaluation board/devkit, which would explain the temperature sensor code elsewhere in the repo, as i don’t think production trilogy modules concerned themselves with temps. whatever scatter does, i guess it was never released. intriguing.

I know you guys are still busy testing and debugging, so this is just an idea I thought I’d share. I don’t happen to have Teletype (yet), but I’ve been reading Just Type’s documentation out of curiosity.

JF.TUNE really struck me as it would allow a very interesting way to create chords, using frequency ratios to the root. A feature which would logically follow is the ability to use JF.SHIFT using fractions in order to navigate through chord progressions using those same ratios.

It would also be very nice to see an implementation of JF.SHIFT.SLEW, JF.TUNE.SLEW and JF.VOX.SLEW for glissandos and nuances.

Also: thanks for making these incredibly brilliant creative tools.

@Galapagoose would you mind sharing the current stable firmware wav file?

Is there any way to revert to the stable release? My JF has unfortunately become too unstable to use with the beta.

v1.0 firmware here

Thanks! Everything is working great now

Thanks @galapagoose! Also a note to others, that’s a link to an autoplaying sound file…had quite the scare in the office this morning hah.

I’ve got a new beta of Just Type built and ready to be tested. Any and all feedback is very welcome, and right here is the place for it. New link: https://www.whimsicalraps.com/pages/just-type

Please read the top section which is a list of fundamental changes that have happened in the development of this new firmware. Apart from this though, the core functionality has not changed - it was all a roundabout way of making the code structure able to be expanded for the Just Type firmware, plus a huge amount of optimization to allow it to do things a lot more nicely.

Furthermore, it is 99% rewritten from the ground-up so there’s likely bugs that didn’t exist before - hence this being a beta. Please don’t put this on your module that you need to perform with this weekend. One nice little thing as a result is the code is a fraction of the size and only takes a little over a minute to update.

Finally - if you haven’t had the RUN jack upgrade performed on your Just Friends (read: is there a little sticker on the side of the jack?) then please be extra careful when you’re patching the run jack. While Eurorack modules are typically able to handle the tiny burst of -12v, I can’t say the same for your phone / laptop / minidisc player.

any idea of when you’ll have more just friends for sale?

Awesome! Looking forward to trying this out. Thanks!

Oooh! Great to see this beta. I know what I’m doing tomorrow.

the following will be on github once it’s released

:+1:

I hope the rewrite went well.

I don’t have teletype but the Just Friends v3 changes alone look great. Can’t wait to try the new run mode. SHIFT was similar enough to SIFT to be scraped for sure. Now I should really pick up a teletype…

If you’re in UK or EU, I have a 2nd Just Friends I have no space for if you’re interested.

A few thoughts after a quick play on Floom mode
This is a really great addition and hugely expands JF’s sound palate. Amazing work.
Run jack input range is approx. -8v to +8v – but out of interest what is the ratio range?
Is there some syncing with the modulation vco? When I turn Ramp away from 12 o clock is get some quite irregular glitchy sounds, but not in the way I would expect if I was FMing 2 normal VCOs
I notice FM input is disabled. It would be great if this could accept CV to control FM amount. This would really increase it’s ability to sculpt FM sounds.

Also Plume mode sampling run on trigger mode is lovely.

Thanks for this awesome update.

EDIT:
Bug report
Shape mode Transient and Sustain.
-At certain time/intone combos 3N,4N,5N &6N started cycling or freeze and don’t stop when i switch modes. They will stop if you increase time/intone. This seems to happen when envelope speeds are slow. It only happens when the FM knob is not at 12 o clock - setting this back to 12 fixes this which is an easy work around.

On a separate note: I also note that Sustain Cycle(non-run) mode no longer responds to gates when the envelope is descending.

these sounds man

any fx in the chain? (if this is pure JT i’ll absolutely flip)
either way thanks for sticking with this project to refine/improve everything!

Was certainly a long journey but I’m a massively better programmer now and feel it’s actually worth sharing. Plus I turned a whole lot of the work into libraries that are already being used for other projects.

This is a bug due to the difference between V1 and V2 hardware. Noted.

It should be 0.5x to 2x. No syncing as it’s not really possible(?) for non integer multiples of ratio.

Yeah I’m a little confused by the math here. I feel like it’s inherent in the JF oscillator design.

Ahh this is working for me, so there must be something happening in the V1 hardware build. Will correct.

I think this should be fixed after I add calibration to zero-out out the FM input jack’s offset voltage.

Do you mean Sustain/Shape or Sound? Either way I’ll get it fixed.

You’re gonna have to flip I’m afraid. This was just test tones through a little portable speaker on my desk. Direct from the MIX jack.

Thank you and keep it coming! More JFs will be available this friday provided we can dial in the firmware.
