Getting another one ASAP just to test these updates. Brilliant work, T. Damn.

Both actually, though I was talking about Shape.

To be honest, this was actually the mode I always have felt let JF down as the ultimate function generator. (On original firmware) if Curve is set to anything other than 12 o clock and you reapply a gate to JF while the envelope is already on the way down, you get a sudden jump to a different point on the curve - I believe this related to the fact that one side of the curve was exponential and the other logarithmic. This results in clicking if it’s patched to certain modules such as a VCA.

It would be incredible if this could be changed so that when retriggered it maintained it’s CV value on the upwards envelope.

YES! So excited about this. Thank you for continuing with this project.

This is a really good point. I avoided changing this in the past because I thought it was really hard / not possible, however I’ve just been thinking about it for a few minutes and I think I can solve it. Thanks for being honest - it makes things better!

That would be really great.

So I’ve been playing with STRATA - really I’d always avoided this because I got fed up of it crashing due to the bug. Firstly, I love the envelope shapes you can get with this - they are really diverse especially when you start modulating run ramp and curve.

However this has a similar issue to sustain mode. If you retrigger you get a funny little bump only and then it has to go back to zero before it will be triggered again. For the same reasons as Sustain mode, it would be great if this could be retriggered properly before it reaches zero, though I suspect this one might be a more challenging fix.

It should be possible & will benefit from the retrigger-level-continuity mentioned above. The implementation of STRATA is actually just modulating the level of the LPG after the function gen, rather than being internal to the oscillator itself. This is how you get the nice expo decay regardless of CURVE setting, but also means the retrigger bug is likely just a small fix in the vactrol model…

(Funny to realize there is a modular synthesizer inside one module of a modular synthesizer…)

Aye! Too much tech… Basically I can fix it. Also, it is one of my more favourite modes now that decay time is controlled by TIME and not just a voltage follower. It feels like a real envelope haha…

quick question
after updating just friends, at the end, all led are blinking fast, super fast
do i have to turn off? wait?
is it successfully updated?

Sounds correct. You’re in FLOOM mode when the bootloader finishes and restarts the module - it’s just the result of that particular combination of knob & switch settings as normal.

second fast question
how do i do this?

"TODO:

  • v8 calibration for TIME jack for better 1v/octave tracking
  • FM, RUN, RAMP, CURVE jack zero-ing calibration for better centering of pots"

Wow, so excited! Magic, as usual Trent.

First off, this is an amazing update – got precious little sleep last night having spent most of it exploring. One thing I noticed is that I could not get JF.SHIFT to work via tt. I did not spend much time with tt stuff but i tried JF.SHIFT and JF.TR (which worked as expected).

Again, thank you, this is really great work.

It says ‘TODO’ because I haven’t implemented it yet.

I’m guessing you weren’t in synthesis mode? (you hadn’t run JF.MODE 1). At present JF.SHIFT only works for that mode. Makes sense that it should work for all modes though - will add it shortly.

@all
How does the pitch of the synthesis mode sound? I feel like octaves aren’t quit on but haven’t investigated further. Does it sound in tune to you (I can do the technical measurements)?

Any crashes? I bashed the II communication bus a lot and it seemed to work fine (thanks @sam!) but want to make sure it lives up to any stresses you might throw at it.

Ah, I see. No I was not. Was trying to transpose a patch I had going in plume mode.

Hi Trent,

I would love to beta test Just Type, but I think there might be something wrong with my Just Friends?

I bought it a few weeks ago from SchneidersLaden as that was the only place I could find one. Ever since it arrived it has been unable to hold a constant pitch / rhythm. I thought it might be a firmware thing, so i upgraded the firmware, but it is still unstable.

Thoughts?

Somebody needs to get that specific module in the hands of mr oizo

That is definitely not how JF is supposed to work. But it’s kind of awesome. I’m sorry, you probably don’t think so, but, um, yeah.

You might be the next pole. ( hopefully you get it sorted out. His support has been great. )

Great to hear you could fix that, I can easily see STRATA becoming my fav mode too. The envelopes just seem very musical. Really interesting to hear about how it’s functioning under the hood, so please don’t hold back on those techy details. Speaking of STRATA as an envelope follower - one thing I always thought would be great was if the Sustain plateaux value was equal to the run jack CV input. Then you could have 6 copies of the same pitch CV being slewed at different rates. But I appreciate this would mean that negative CV input to run would be useless (although who says it couldn’t plateaux at a negative value!?). I love the idea of multiple VCOs sliding to converge on the same pitch at different rates though.

On a different note, I was wondering if you could clarify the changes in Spill mode? Is it just that you’ve added the soft sync? Is there any change to the function of the run input? I notice that on higher +ve CV retriggering becomes more common which I believe did not happen in the previous version.

Baha no honestly it’s been great - we have been listening to it for hours. But yeah. Also want to be able to do other stuff with it too is the thing.

That sounds awesome…

Sound a little bit like one of the ADC inputs is not connected and is floating. Do any of the jacks or knobs do nothing?
