Now that I had the k-mix for over a year, I guess it’s time for an update.
I do have to admit that even after all this time, I could not get used to those touch faders.
When I can, I use the computer editor to set everything.
My main critique is that it’s very hard to dial in a precise value, and the response in general is rather coarse and jumpy. Also, you can’t just subtly nudge up the volume a bit, you need to perfectly centre the point where the current level is with your finger, and then slighly move it up, but long story short: this never works for me, hence the mouse approach.
I know that many people are totally ok with the faders though. So take this with the necessary pinch of salt.
I thought I would use it more as a mixer, perhaps even in a live setting. In the end, that totally didn’t happen. A bit because of the aforementioned problem, but also because I just didn’t have a chance. Haven’t been playing live in a while, and now with the whole coronavirus thing… but that’s another topic.
What I do have to say though, is that as a multi-channel audio interface/router, which also works when the computer is off, and is also really compact, I am super happy with the k-mix. I can keep my stuff patched into it, with a bunch of cables going from its outputs to the modular and to norns. When I have something going I like I just record things on the fly, and it’s great to route signals around.
I don’t think I’ll ever use it for live music, should I ever make that kind of thing again. But as a audio interface and routing device it’s definitely a keeper.
