hmm, cant decide…
digital effects got a ton of, trying to avoid eurorack, but CV is everywhere…
I do like the idea of a spring reverb and a cv controllable vca…

I’m guessing that it’s a digital frequency shifter. Otherwise that is the bargain of the century.

For the price it’s really a good deal! If you already have a modular that does all of that you might not need it though :slight_smile:

I’m in mostly because I’m a sucker for complete sets. I hope their next kickstarter project is a good power solution for the two little boxes.

It’s a very well thought out little box (as the first field kit was).

There are a couple of compromises there which are a bit of a pity - the “one or other” nature of the frequency shifter/looper and sequencer/envelope generator. But they’re understandable when it comes to producing something to a certain price and size. The frequency shifter certainly sounds nice.

The CV bus system is clever and opens it up to people not already invested in modular infrastructure by getting rid of the need for lots of (stack)cables and multiples.

I won’t be buying one as I already have 95% of the functionality of it and the original field kit in my modular. Given that it’s already well over target though, it looks like Koma have another success on their hands.

I want to put them both in a skiff with meng qi’s Please Exist for boosting/lowering levels plus maybe some other 2hp untilit modules. Would be quite a fun little system

Yeah they say the frequency shifter is digital:

we want to give everyone access to the source code of the DSP engine and user interface itself. The digitally controlled parts include the looper, the frequency shifter, sample rate reduction, bit crushing effect, phaser, the CV interface and the Roll-O-Decks. The code is commented, so even if you are not an experienced programmer you can tweak certain settings and see the results!

But I’m curious: does this mean you can flash your own firmware? Probably not.

I must admit that this feels a bit like a jack of all trades and master of none. I get the point of putting a lot of stuff in a small and compact package for a very affordable price, but actually that would make more sense if the field kit was really field-proof, which it only partially is. To me it’s always been more like a “studio kit”, since you still need a some additional modules/gear to really make this shine, also there are some weird omissions considering that this is intended to be used with the field kit, like no trigger out for the sequencer to drive the solenoid.
The only thing that seems interesting in this for me is the spring reverb, but it feels a bit bulky for just that…
Right now if I was into spending more money on this I would get the eurorack panel, and make myself a small 3U case with the field kit and a bunch of modules I have (fx, modulations, small sequencer) to make a portable (albeit still not field-proof) system that I could use for all sorts of concrete sound experiments.

yup, actually this has kind of sold it to me… as there is quite an opportunity here,
so the digital stuff is… the loop, delay and roll a deck, so if we look at which bits of hardware they use we can see we have the following at our disposal:

  • 3 outputs
  • 3 inputs
  • 10 pots
  • 5 cv routings from the 4 cv input
  • 4 leds
  • 2 switch
  • 1 mode button with led state

this is from what was mentioned under dsp control, its quite possible there is more… e.g. the routing matrix is likely under dsp control… that means potentially we could have digital control over the vca and spring reverb controls (as these are part of the routing)

sounds like memory might be quite limited (3 seconds loop is quite short), perhaps we should be asking koma to get a slightly bigger chip as a stretch goal.

I asked about reprogramming on the kickstarter site here is the answer

There is a USB port hidden behind the front panel that will allow reflashing the microcontroller in the Field Kit FX. Just unscrew the front panel, connect to a PC via USB and transfer new code to the device and you’re good to go!

I’d press them about the type of USB connection. Is it capable of doing SWD (unlikely)?

Otherwise try to get them to include something along those lines (even JTAG pin headers). Hacking hardware without a debugger can be hard work.

good point about swd/jtag… id already asked about them exposing uart/spi/i2c :slight_smile:
id assume the usb will be using the usb dfu mode, as per other stm chips… no?

Absolutely no idea… never been near STM chips. I have tinkered with Atmel SAMDs in a Arduino and some Adafruit Feathers. Otherwise it’s just the AVR32 in Monome modules that I’m familiar with (and where I wish I had a JTAG).
