oh absolutely! the processing is really dead simple. SuperCollider is just playing back and layering a buffer (a piano recording in this case) from random starting points a few hundred times (SuperCollider is great for iteration… definitely a big plus over PD/Max, this). i’m adding an octave down and a fifth up 25% of the iterations respectively.

try feeding it some fixed fundamental arpeggios or with some debussy/eller/reich piece. try feeding it ALL debussy/eller/reich pieces. it will make drone-jelly for you. (with a bit of distortion, reverb and compression you are pretty much there)

A short excerpt of a recent rehearsal:

Here’s a live recording from Hybrid Decliners, a new minimal-techno live improv modular project. My friend Nick and I started out just doing an occasional jam session (him: Doepfer A-100 case + Beatstep Pro, me: isms and Kaossilator) and before we knew it we had a name and gigs and stuff.

Our website is a mini art-piece in itself; it pulls some recent Vine videos and does a personal live A/V mix for you using WebGL and the Web Audio API (on supported browsers.)

We might try livestreaming some performances in the future; here’s a test I did with just me and the isms:

I know, I didn’t turn my phone…oh well.

Sound isn’t that great either. Was just messing around last night and filmed it to show my buddies the Grids in action.

Hope it’s ok to post some non monome stuff too.

Made a nice little patch with the new erica black wavetable vco. Thing sounds lovely.

Exploring controlling the Turing Machine as a melody generated. Braids is our Karplus sound source, and it’s quantized; Turing is playing a short set of notes across a limited range, making it reasonably controllable. I’m still learning Clouds; I also wasn’t as free to play in this setup because of my camera position.

But it was still interesting to sit and listen to the instrument, seeing what it wanted to do.

(In many ways, this is nowhere near as interesting as Actual Composition, but there’s some interesting learning to be done).

Shameless self promotion here, but I released some new stuff a few months ago. :satellite:

very cool sounds! has a nicely old-school, almost a chiptune-like vibe; a soundtrack for the best days of the SNES. late nights and RPGs, wandering the overworld, fantastical flora & architecture of each new area.

contract with my label ended so finally was able to put my album back up on bandcamp. Think I’ll stick to releasing on my own in future.

you continue to impress! beautiful piece. how did you make the chip sounds? anything fun like a gameboy tracker or a notable sample?

Although this video is from a couple years ago, it still constitutes one of my “latest tracks/videos.” As I’m working through graduate school, the music composing/recording/performing portion of my routine has been put on the back burner. However, I wanted to participate a bit more in this community and share my sonic endeavors, so here’s a taste from my set at the 2014 San Diego Experimental Guitar Show:

Guitar > pedals > Audiomulch > speakers

The stereo dynamics of the performance aren’t too apparent in this recording, as it was miked fairly close to the stage. And since it was a room microphone, you also get the bar chatter. Oh well. It still give you an idea of what I’m up to.

I’ve been honing this setup and performance style for a few years now, and I really enjoy it. One of these days, I’m going to incorporate my 128 grid to chop up the live loops.

On another note, I just want to say that I really cherish the community that has developed around this forum. I’ve posted here and there, and plan to participate more in the future. But from what I’ve gathered from lurking and listening, this is one bunch of supportive folks. So hats off to y’all!
