Before Christmas the crossing between Dover in the UK and Calais in France was closed for a few days due to fears about a new strain of Covid. Many of these lorries trying to leave the UK were diverted to an airfield nearby and after a few days staged a protest at the conditions they were being kept in. Inspired by this tweet by Tim Shaw:

I made a piece of music from it. Resampled the recording a couple of times, added some field recordings of my own and a guitar sample triggered by Lil’ Pup.

Recorded Christmas 1994 (except rain/birds on Raindioactivity recorded in 93) using a Saisho SW5000 radio, SH101, Juno 60, Roland Space Echo RE150, TR606, various tape recorders and the TV.

Christman 94 was an odd time. My Dad had to sell the house in a hurry losing lots of money and had no work. He rented a temporary flat for me, my brother and himself in Langton, a small farmers village. Most of our stuff was stored in a damp shed in the garden. The flat was only for 6 months after which my Dad believed we might all be homeless. The lady living upstairs was having an affair. We could hear it through the floor above my bedroom. I tried acid for the first time just as we moved in, it got pretty ugly, although it was fun initially.

I was 16 that summer between finishing school and maybe having to go back again so my Dad had some money. I sold some stuff and recently got myself a Roland Space Echo RE150. They were cheap back then. In between sketching and dreaming of logos for potential artist names and record labels, I dived further into making music. I could say I was escaping the homeless worries my Dad had, but this didn’t really seem to bother me as much as it did him. Music seemed more important than anything else in the world.

I was listening to Kraftwerk’s Radioactivity and FSOL Lifeforms a great deal around this time. Putting sounds through machines…this was me, this is where I was.

I spent most evenings listening back to what I created earlier that day. Late at night after everyone else was asleep, headphones on, tape recorder by my side, lying on my back looking up at cheap Christmas lights blue tacked to our ceiling. I went into sound.

I’ve been looking for ways to make my video’s more interesting than blinking lights and cables, and more in accordance to the emotions I would like to convey in the music (blinking lights and cables don’t always perform well in that department…). I’m quite happy with this attempt and I hope to take it further in this direction. Hope you like it too!

Patch notes: live hang drum and voice through Bastl THYME used as a looper with feedback turned all the way up. Nerdseq is sequencing and modulating Mangrove and three ER-301 single-cycle oscillator voices. Furthermore the ER-301 is mixing, adding effects, tying everything together and recording all the different stems of the performance that are mixed in post with some compression in Adobe Audition. No other audio processing has been done.

New to posting here, but have long lurked. Trying to be more active in general in that regard. Thanks everyone for a year of great reads, research and killer apps. Here’s a track from earlier this year that I made about the 80’s Satanic Panic, using footage of a documentary from that time, VHS footage of my old “hardcore” band, video synth, and a dusty studio of analog gear processed through digital boxes.

Happy New Years everyone, I hope 2021 proves to be a time for thriving and creating for all of us.

Here is Side B of the tape I published on New Years Eve (now sold out) on the TDO Label.
Long Shadows Over Europe.

(Field recordings from deep inside Epping Forest on the outskirts of London recorded in 2012. The first 8 minutes or so of this track was broadcast at the Dark Outide event in Epping forest in 2019. I reworked this into a wider piece which tries to place my regret of leaving the EU into sound. In the middle, the ambient section I am trying to evoke in sound long shadows at the end of a day.)
