Playing with Less Concepts over the weekend.
I could sit with this for hours; days!
Thank you @dan_derks

Hi @dan_derks - I’m having a lot of fun with Olafur and wanted to send through some observations in case they hadn’t already been picked up

  • Adjusting any parameters on the midi controller (I’m sending midi from a DSI Rev2) will usually cause the pitch of notes (both notes sent to the engine and to midi) to drop to a very low frequency. This happens even while holding down keys on the midi controller. The effect is very percussive and quite pleasant, but a little inconvenient that it occurs on any parameter adjustment on the Rev2. Re-pressing keys on the Rev2 will override the low pitch and bring it back to normal.

  • While any key is held on the midi controller, any subsequent key press causes high to increase by 1. If all keys are released, the next key press resets high to 1. low doesn’t appear to increase in response to a key press and stays set to 1. Any key press will override any grid or enc adjustments to the parameters. This seems to be normal behavior. However…

  • Adjusting the Rev2 volume pot all the way down and up again while a key is held will sometimes put Less Concepts into a state where high is not reset on a key press after all keys released. Instead, high will continue to increase by 1 on each key press well beyond the usual range (I’ve gone as far as 200). It seems that the pitch of triggered notes might behave strangely when this occurs. Navigating to high/low using enc1 and hitting key3 to reset usually resolves this. I couldn’t see any errors in the maiden repl.

I’d be curious to hear whether anyone else is experiencing similar issues.

Fantastic work on this Dan - I continue to be floored by your creativity!

bump for new version up top! JF + less concepts is pretty. plz share yr sounds!

2.1 (crow) changes

crow integration

  • params: crow: enable pullups?
  • params: output , to choose either CV (outputs 1 + 3 do v/8, 2 + 4 do envelopes) or i2c-connected Just Friends

fixes + other stuff

  • ~ r e f r a i n updated to use new softcut panning syntax
  • params: softcut pan slew for ~ r e f r a i n
  • fixed: probability of transposition params weren’t re-loading with sets
  • fixed: midi device now selectable (previously defaulted to system device 1)

less concepts via crow into two mangroves. just friends adding modulation

Edit: shoddy mangroves tuning. Eh, I was excited to play less concepts via crow. More concerted effort next go round.

this was my intro to opening up JF Synthesis via i2c. you somehow keep making a really great script even better. thank you!

bump for new! clock less concepts with crow’s input[2]!

please replace entire existing folder, not just the less_concepts.lua file – there is a new lib file included

2.1.1 (crow) changes

  • NEW : beatclock-crow.lua in lib folder, adds option for script to be clocked via crow (input 2).
option in the standard ‘clock’ param.
  • NEW : params: output can choose two different crow output formats:
crow cv (1x v/8) is output[1] = v/8, output[2] = trigger. this means you can send the note data from both streams to a single v/8 destination.
    crow cv (2x v/8) is outputs[1+3] = v/8, outputs[2+4] = triggers

OMG, this is the holy grail Dan!
Less Concepts is fabulous and the only niggle I had about it was “If only I could clock it with Sapèl”.
Now I can.
Thank you.

very excited about the external clocking. Thanks for adding it so quickly!

Wanted to ask; can less concepts be run using only crow? Or is crow only a sort of expander for it and cannot run less concepts on its own? (that is, without needing tt or norns)

Sorry if this is obvious; Do not have a crow yet but I get that less concepts having a lua script means it can be run on crow from a computer. Is this accurate?

Thanks ~

No, it’s a norns script. You need a full Linux system to use it. (norns or other /DIY.)

Crow is not a “headless norns,” it has very different capabilities. For starters, it can’t talk to grids direclty and isn’t a Linux device.

You could certainly take inspiration/code from the sequencing structures in less concepts and other norns scripts when making stuff for crow.

[edit] just to be really clear, and sorry if this is obvious… the norns patch does synthesis and audio buffer manipulation driven from the sequencer core, and uses a grid as a controller. the crow version is just the sequencer. no audio, no grid.

ezra’s spot-on, but i will be looking at porting it tomorrow and if all seems reasonable, hopefully will have a functioning version by end of next week!

Chomping at the bit to try Less
Concepts out with crow and my DPO :rocket:

[redacted] – a non-working druid-only version of less concepts used to live here. nothing to see now, please use less concepts on norns

Wait…so you can load/run a script and then call the methods/functions on the fly, as well change variables?! :open_mouth:

yes! you can either use a laptop for “actual” control over the variables (via on-the-fly druid commands), but you can also just call the dice() function with a trigger to crow’s input[2] and no laptop!

That was fast!
Thank you. Now need to get my crow and try this :seedling:

Ah blimey, I was just expecting using norns+crow, that’s amazing you’ve got it running on crow alone! Still waiting for UK customs to release my crow from captivity…

oh I am loving the ability to clock via crow input! here’s crow JF ii, marbles/rings and pico drums, all synced by tempi
