Does anyone have any experience with the 2HP MIDI module? It is said to be class compliant with Mac and PC but silent as to iOS.

It is reasonably priced for what I am looking for but I’d rather know if it will work before I order one…

I don’t own one but I would say that if it states that it is “class compliant” then it will most definitely work with iOS. Appropriate dongle will be required according to your iOS device.

It’s a class compliant MIDI device so it should work on any OS or MIDI host that can handle class compliant devices. iOS and iPadOS handle these things nicely. For the iPad Air you most likely need a CCK as it’s lightning, right? Also, not all devices play nicely if there’s a hub between them.

Ah true, the newer ones joined the pro with USB C. Sweet, then it of course needs no CCK and might even work with a hub. At least my pro works very well with many USB MIDI devices through a hub.

I connect my modular to my iPad via an ES-9 and the CalDigit TS-4.

Any midi that needs to come out is via CoVariant.

I use a Befaco CV Thing and Midi Link Sync to clock AUM from Pam’s.

I’d like to use my ipad with my eurorack, but I don’t have space in the rack for interface module. Are there any external audio interfaces that could be used to send/receive cv as well as audio?

There’s a presonus soundcard I had for a while which has DC coupled outputs you can use to send out CV from bitwig etc. I can’t remember exactly what it was but had 10 in and 10 out, was effectively similar to the expert sleepers

Any DC coupled class compliant USB interface will do the job. Another option is to build a little interface case with, say, a 4ms Pod 34x which fits the deep ES modules.

I use ES-9 straight into AUM. It’s worth the space it requires, IMO.

In fact, how my main synth is set up, I can’t even use my synth at all without plugging in the iPad. Since I’m in AUM anyways, it’s super easy to just hit record when something cool is happening.

Of course I’m still searching for a solution to what should be a simple problem….

I want to use Koala as a sample player. Not for drums or beats, but just for triggering mostly spoken audio clips.

I know I can send CV into the iPad via the interface, but I’m not at all sure how to convert that trigger to a midi note for Koala playback.

Generally I would use the Befaco CV Thing which makes it pretty easy. But this is for a travel synth where space is a premium and I’d like to use software.

How do I do this?

if you have mirack, you can add a midi trigger output module; send the cv via ES-9 into mirack with an audio in , then through the midi trigger output module to convert to midi, out from mirack into aum for routing to koala.

Have you considered just using Koala’s own sequencer? I use it self contained on my phone and either sequenced by Drambo or itself on the ipad.

Yes, but the goal is to use generatively created triggers made by the synth to trigger long form samples like spoken word or field recordings without using a CV > midi conversion module.

I criminally underutilize the iPad for its musical capabilities. For me it’s essentially a digital mixer and recorder, and not much else. I know I’m missing out on lots of good interactive potential and musical capabilities, but that’s just not how I’ve used it.

I’m just beginning to get out of the box and dip my toes into hardware, starting with the 0-Coast. I read that the output on Apple’s lightning to 3.5mm headphone adapter is DC-coupled, so I’m trying to use it to send CV signals from my iPhone over a eurorack patch cable into the 0-Coast. I believe the outputs on the headphone dongle are relatively low compared to typical eurorack level — about +/- 0.5V. I’ve been experimenting with drambo but so far haven’t found a working combination of in-app module routing, app settings, iOS system settings, hardware cables and adapters etc that results in audible CV modulation in my 0-coast patch. I’ve mostly been trying to patch the cable from my headphone dongle into the 1V/oct pitch input on the 0-coast, thinking that +/1 0.5V would be enough to hear a full octave of pitch modulation. But it seems like nothing I do in the app is having any effect. Has anyone here been able to get better results while using the Apple lightning to 3.5mm headphone adapter (or the Apple USB-C to 3.5mm headphone adapter)?

If I’m able to get this working, my next step would be to try to find a way to amplify the signal to eurorack level. I know there are plenty of eurorack modules for converting between line level and modular level signals. But it seems like overkill to buy a whole modular case and power supply just to be able to use one of those modules with my semi-modular. I’m looking for something more like a desktop solution or an adapter that isn’t a eurorack module itself.

It would be much simpler to use a DC-coupled class compliant audio interface.

Don’t forget that the 0-Coast has two MIDI channels, too; the CV/Gate outputs can be configured as internal tap-tempo LFOs, which offers some additional modulation possibilities.

Unfortunately software modulation to CV is often steppy over MIDI, or pricey to implement via DC coupling. Personally, I just use my iPad to sequence the 0-Coast via MIDI, use the 0-Coast’s internal modulation sources, and route the audio to the iPad for effects.
