Oh so cool this thread is great!

+1 to this! It’s actually the school I go to.

Colour me dumb but I’m looking at their page on my phone and I can’t find where the samples are. Definitely interested. The info on their site is so welcoming!

Had to switch to desktop mode on my phone to find them.

Well, I feel like we should do this! What’s the best way to set up a flexible Dropbox for those interested to start pooling sounds?

Aren’t those recordings of student oieces? They don’t seem like samples of instruments.

I enjoy making my own samples but sometimes I cannot or do not have the time to execute an idea. Free Sound Project has been my go to forever but lately I have been using https://www.asoundeffect.com/

Super organized with very useful sounds. The metadata is usually specific enough you can find whatever you are looking for. And usually high quality. When I use samples they usually get thrown through old tape or effects but it is nice to start with a clean recording.

Took me quite a few minutes to find out how to get to the samples myself. On desktop you need to hover over “Musical Instrument Samples” in the navigation to get a dropdown menu, which lets you choose the recording year/instruments. I’m liking the Found Objects collections in particular.

Christian Henson, who co-founded Spitfire Audio, has a few sets of free sampled pianos here. Each of them consists of the audio samples plus an EXS configuration for Pro Tools, which Ableton also recognizes. Some of them are recorded with felt on the strings, and sound really great. Most of them also have recordings for the sound of the hammers coming off the strings. I really love the collection, having access to good piano sounds gave birth to a lot of musical ideas I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Spitfire Audio also seems to have a lot of high-end orchestral samples which seem pretty amazing (with corresponding price tag).

Check out the “Musical Instrument Samples” menu at the top. The samples are divided into pre-2012 and post-2012, then by instrument etc. For example: http://theremin.music.uiowa.edu/MIS-Pitches-2012/MISTenorTrombone2012.html

Okay let’s start doing this!

I’ve started a very rudimentary folder over at Dropbox with a list of all the links that people have provided here and a couple of folders to get us started… I believe anyone can request to join the folder and I’ll accept any that come in. Otherwise send me your email (via DM if you like) and I’ll add you that way.

Feel free to upload your own folders as you see fit and let’s see how this evolves.

I’ll update the ‘• other sources’ document to reflect what people are linking to here as time goes on.

I’m off out tonight (in about 10 minutes!) so don’t have time to upload any files right now but will get on it soon!

edit: hmmm now I’m not sure sure that you can ‘request’ to join the folder, I may have been imagining that? Anyway, someone please let me know if that’s an available option? Messaging your email address might be the best way to join.

This is great! I was aware of Spitfire Audio and the Labs stuff but didn’t know about the separate Pianobook project - really interesting.

I think this would benefit having a thread of it’s own

Metapop.com constantly has remix competitions, in which you get access to the source material… which you may be able to use outside of the competitions (read closer than me, obvs). They tend towards more DJ-oriented music.

https://sounds.com/ used to send me updates all the time about high quality free samples they hosted. I think they are connected to Metapop (?), and I only started receiving sounds emails after the Landr or Metapop sign-up.

Landr’s move into the samples space: https://blog.landr.com/landr-free-sample-packs/

Kinda random sounds here: https://freesound.org/browse/

Better for spoken word samples, and historical recordings: http://www.ubu.com/sound/

Can’t seem to upload to this. Is there a way to link it with edit/write permissions enabled?

Updating this thread title to be more current

I think there was another thread created about the community sample sharing, so this might cause confusion.

Here it is: Llllllll sample pack
