OBS is what Im using, and it was also relatively straightforward. I was able to set it up basically right before the first time I went “live”.

Alright cool, same here. My only issue with Twitch is that I cannot remove the tag that says something like “Rhythm Game” or something like that…

That is a permanent tag of “Music and performing arts” for some reason. And not to late to put yr name on the list

By the way @noiserock I’ll be available on the 26th for the test run. What time zone will we all be referencing regarding scheduled time slots come May 10th?

The set up for the live-streamed Resonant Frequencies show is:

The basic idea is that is uses nginx-rtmp to manage streams, and OBS on the server to composite with overlays, and do cut scene transitions. To do this you need a server in the cloud that has a GPU - which is not too expensive on gCloud, for example.

Details are (slowly) being written up in this Google doc.

Small suggestion: Don’t have the animation “reverse back”, as it is somewhat distracting when it does: Things that “unexplode” have a way of grabbing users attention, as you want to “see it all come together”. So just have it disapate/fade out when “exploded”… wait a few seconds, and then fade back in small in the corner — and loop.

Great suggestion! Many thanks.

I’m not exactly familiar with this “nginx-rtmp” server… how will one connect to it? I understand the gist of what it will do but I just would like to know some more details I guess?

Count me in. Already streaming here at least weekly, so I’m reasonably well up to speed. Will watch for details, and happy to assist with anyone who needs it.

Basically, if you’re using OBS or similar software for your stream, you set the NGINX rtmp server as your destination that you’re streaming to, and then the rtmp server relays it from there to (wherever).

I’m on OBS looking through all the options for servers to stream to but I’m not seeing that one

Edit: Wait, are we saying that we’ll be using the “Custom” option under service and naming the server as “nginx-rtmp”?

I believe you’d have to use “custom”.

EDIT: Well, doesn’t matter what you name it, the naming is just internal – but yes, we’d use the custom option and populate it with the details (address, stream key etc) of the RTMP server.

NGINX is just a server-side platform that can run various web servers, streaming servers etc…

Read the doc!

In very brief: nginx is a web server package, nginx-rtmp is an extension that lets it serve RTMP streams as well. I run nginx and OBS on a server in Google Cloud. Since the server needs to have GPU, they are more expensive than normal cloud servers… but still only ~$1/hour.

It may be less confusing to keep the discussion of streaming protocols outside of the lines community stream back in the Coronavirus streaming thread.

hey everyone.

So we are doing a test over at twitch.tv/lines_community tomorrow at 6pm UTC. Follow along and give feedback! It might even inspire you to sign up

May10th is still the date for the main stream, unless anything goes horribly wrong tomorrow.

All the best.
