I managed to catch a rather brilliant documentary back in 2008, directed by Mika Taanila, at Sonic Acts festival in Amsterdam.

It’s called The Future is Not What It Used To Be, and centres on little known Finnish artist Erkki Kurenniemi (who unfortunately passed away a few years ago) and his early pioneering computer artworks and instruments.

At the time I think I found a copy online, and even appropriated it in a live set at one point, but as far as I know there is no official release and it seems to have vanished somewhat now. It just does the rounds at film festivals every now & then, or at least it did for a while.

It’d be nice to see it get loose on a streaming platform of some kind. I think I still have a copy lying around somewhere.

great documentary and great character – some of his ideas/approaches reminded me of Don Buchla.
I saw it ages ago and I remember it was even on utube but unfortunately no more.

I finally bought Elektro Moskva and absolutely loved it so I went back for the extras. I knew that some of the Formanta etc synths were temperamental but I (perhaps quite stupidly) never really considered that it was because parts were at such a premium that many instruments were literally constructed from components foraged from scrap. Amazing!

The first time I saw Lightning Bolt in Providence I was 15 and had no idea what a DIY venue was never mind that I was going to one when I asked my dad to drop me off. I just knew that I liked loud noise music and Brian Chippendale’s art. I think the venue was called The Living Room but I’ve had a hard time finding a search term that doesn’t bring me to DIY furniture so idk really. Their set at around midnight (and the hours of unexpected openers) really made an impression. I’ve seen them a handful of times since but I miss when they played on the floor in the crowd.
