Thank you for this. What a fascinating individual. I’d never heard of him or his music before but I ended up watching both of these and will check the music out. I can very much relate to what he says about his hearing diverging from other people’s.

My pleasure!
I can’t recommend The Books highly enough. Their music constantly makes me rethink my own. Hearing Nick break down “Smells Like Content” on the excellent Song Exploder podcast is fantastic and something I’d urge anyone to give a listen:

Has this been posted? “All my homies hate Skrillex”, about dubstep from its early days and how the dub went out of it.
I was never completely single-mindedly into dubstep, but it was quite important for me for a few years just as all this transpired, and was part of the same sort of tribe as the narrator so I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I’m not really in to any of this music (particularly the latter) but this was excellently done music criticism and watched all of it. Thanks for sharing.

What a great bit of work there. Loved that analysis and backstory to it. Put together like only a real fan can.
It’s only a short video comparitively, but I really enjoyed this look into Minilogue and their musical process from 2014. Really aspirational stuff for me. Not the gear, but the freedom, surroundings and the thoughtfulness involved.

Who’s watching tonight?
Sittin my teen down for this…cause forcing these things on teens always goes as hoped
Actually now that I write that I’ll instead plead my case. Anyway she’s already into indie so I’ll have a good argument and fingers-crossed it resonates.

Timbah.on.toast is a great channel, but this one was totally surprising when it showed up. Not their usual subject matter, but just as good as the rest.

I just came home from seeing this and HIGHLY recommend seeing it in a theater. The sound design and music direction is fantastic and deserves to be heard loud.
The director, Todd Haynes was on hand to give some background and answer some questions. It was quite a massive effort to get everyone involved to participate and I’m so glad they were able to make it happen.

Sound quality was something I was seriously considering. I was debating whether to bring in my studio speakers and your comment sealed it (we didn’t get around to watching it). Where I am I don’t see theaters playing it anytime soon.
That’s so cool you got to see Haynes talk about it. One of our best directors. Seems like a lovely person too.

Yeah, the use of surround sound was so fantastic. I guess they did a Dolby Atmos mix as well, which would have been amazing to experience. He also made heavy use of all the Warhol screen tests which were so beautiful to see on a big screen too.
Todd Haynes is fantastic.
He made the choice to only include interviews with people who where there in the avant-garde/art/film/music scene while the VU were active instead of a bunch of random talking heads speaking about their influence on future generations. He even got La Monte Young to talk! Also, John Cale fully participated which couldn’t have been easy to do.
We are lucky to have Haynes as a local who is so involved with the film community here.

Damn, I’ve been really out of the loop. I didn’t know this was a project or that there would be a screening with Todd Haynes present to talk about it. Do you know if him being there was a one time thing?
Yeah it was just for the 7pm showing at the Hollywood theater in Portland. From what I hear he was on some kind of press tour earlier this week but wanted to do the premiere on home turf.

Oh well, I’ll probably go see it at the Hollywood anyways. I miss that theater. Haven’t been there since before covid.

yeah. the only two movies I’ve seen in a theater were at the Holywood.
they played the Hunger in September and David J from Bauhaus played some songs before the movie and talked about meeting Bowie + shooting the opening scenes. kind of amazing.

Whelp there’s no way I’m going to be able to wait hoping it will come to theaters here, so active monitors it is.
