Here’s a bit of background info about why I decided to organize this event:
From living room to library
My wife and daughter enjoy reading a book in our living room, where my eurorack modular is also located. We regularly have reading nights: I work on long compositions that create a pleasant ‘reading environment’ for the rest of the family. The joy derived from this led me to share the experience publicly, pitching the idea to our city’s central library. Fortunately, they responded with great enthusiasm. The library, which opened its doors in 2018, boasts a fantastic, spacious architecture. We are really looking forward to performing in that environment.
About Voltmeister
Voltmeister is a German-Dutch trio of musicians dedicated to crafting sound with modular synthesizers since 2016. For this project, Voltmeister collaborates with classical pianist and fellow modular synthesist Maarten Vloon.
Exploring Parallels
The parallels between ambient music and literature lie in their ‘long form’ and ‘slow process’ nature, unfolding gradually over time. As a good novel takes hours to develop, Voltmeister’s ambient compositions offer various passages and musical plot twists during this afternoon event. Research suggests that instrumental music, particularly classical and ambient genres, enhances concentration and focus during cognitive tasks like reading (source: Blood, A.J., & Zatorre, R.J. – 2001).
