Two kind of techy questions.

  1. Is anyone doing live capture/streaming for games system stuff (on a Mac)? If so, what are you using for the capture stuff? @Angela and I are thinking about capturing some Switch playing to upload to Youtube (our internet isn’t fast enough for actual streaming I don’t think).
  1. Can anyone suggest a cheap/reliable webcam that works (ideally sans having to install anything/drivers) on a Mac? Obviously all the laptops have ok-enough webcams, but now that I’ll be doing more teaching online, I want to have some video setup in my studio space, where it’s a mac mini + monitor (hence no webcam). A lot of the logitech stuff is quite expensive, and some of the cheaper alternatives seem to have mixed reviews in terms of whether or not they work on Macs at all, much less without weird software.

  2. use your phone! someone here should be able to give mac instructions (i’ve been using linux and android)

Yeah, OBS would be great to setup. On that front do you need to also have JACK (or whatever else) to capture multiple audio sources, or does OBS handle inter-app audio “natively”?

For capture, I was mainly thinking of the hardware side of things. Like, connecting the Switch to something to capture the HDMI output. I’ve seen a couple options, but the prices are alll over the place for that stuff.

Hmm, a phone! I’ll check out some Youtube videos, but that could be quite elegant, particularly since I don’t want the camera physically set up when I’m not using it.

edit: phone excitement was short lived, as Zoom (what I would (sadly) need to use for work/teaching) doesn’t let you use “virtual” webcams…

We’re over the moon to announce the 2nd all-day Threads*Takeovers event from XOLO.

XOLO was initiated to collate and connect extraordinary voices; an act intended to encourage people to connect further, risk associations outside of our geographic, cultural and social circles, and hope that we can transcend limitations.

On Saturday 12th September, we present a global array of artists working within the broad definitions of contemporary audio, visual and experiential exploration - you can expect forward-thinking music and braindancing visuals from an international community of innovators.

This is an attempt to offer a more expansive experience of each other’s worlds; the artists are not grouped by scene but by their energy, their wish to connect through music and vision and their abilities to broaden awareness outside of our ‘bubbles’ (to use a current and often loaded and limiting expression). Each artist is an aspect of the life force, attitudes and emotional generosity that is vital to us all as connective beings.

This year has been incredibly challenging for many of us. XOLO therefore welcomes all to explore and celebrate diversity, expression, inquiry and the power of expression as a unifying force. We hope that those who do invest in these artist’s works will take it further, and seek to represent them on labels, events and in contemporary culture.

hello!

i gotta looonggg stream today hosted by cached as apart of their monthly week of streaming/fundraising/slowtime events called “longform”. the primary goal of longform is to share a chuck of slow time together for a good cause. donations will be gathered, pooled, and directed towards organizations helping to secure voting rights. i hope you drop by for a time today, and the next day and the next day and the next day to see some really fabulous artists play.

Did anybody ever have issues with Facebook suddenly blocking the embed for an in-progress live stream due to alledged copyright concerns?

Basically we are streaming the Futurological Congress right now, which is all going through facebook, but the embed we have on the website of the congress stopped working saying:
“This video can’t be embedded because it may contain content owned by someone else.”

It all seems to have happened when the person giving the talk showed a video, so maybe that triggered something. But there was no communication from Facebook about it, nor anything else that would help to identify the problem. So maybe it’s something else entirely.

we just announced three ticketed streaming shows:

they’re all pre-taped and i’m really excited about how they’ve gone so far. it’s been interesting to watch other paid/unpaid concert streams and see what feels like it works (and doesn’t) in the format. not sure if this resonates with anyone here but i’ve been noticing that concerts that try to behave like normal concerts (i.e. on a stage, in a venue, even all band members facing outward?) have a depressing undertone to me, especially when the first song ends and there’s no applause. after watching a few and feeling it out we decided to try and lean into what was possible in this situation that wasn’t possible on a normal tour, like having the camera/audience very close and intimate, using fragile/tempermental/logistically impractical instruments we’d probably never take on the road, or facing inwards like we’re at practice.

very interested to hear if anyone has thoughts on what works or doesn’t for them both as a performer and an audience member in this medium!

tech side note: we’re doing them through noonchorus which seemed like the easiest / most fluid platform. anyone have experience with them?

oh and if you want to get tickets they’re here - if any lines people want to watch em but money is tight just pm me closer to the show and i’ll do the digital version of putting you on the guest list.
