@shellfritsch’s post explains it pretty well:

It seems to me like the main technical challenge isn’t the hosting or switching but rather that each participant is running OBS correctly and outputting a quality stream. The organizational challenge remains, of course.

The live set from the other night’s stream. Can’t say I’d recommend the Zoom app for audio quality, but it’s a bit more interactive than a straight-up radio show.

have you had good results with this?
ultralite + mac user also and would like best quality for a stream

^ thisssssssss ^

it’s no small amount of work to get everyone on the same page and make sure all the technical kinks are worked out ahead of time. i think it’s best if one person coordinates the whole thing and then delegates tasks as needed.

Im still testing. Have you done any experiments? Pity it doesn’t see my 828, it means I have to route everything through a DAW. Normally I use the soundcard as a mixer.

thank you all for the input! highly appreciated.

to start, I guess collecting a rough estimate of how many would want to participate, and take it from there. this would help me estimate if I can pull this off by myself. with some weeks of planning and testing I think this is definitely doable. especially if I can find a good way to allocate tasks. But that is my IRL job(post production coordinator).

Not sure if this should be a separate thread, but let’s start here. don’t be shy!

Would be willing to help with this and participate. I’m a rank beginner at streaming, but I’ve managed to set up OBS, OBS Cam, and stream via Twitch. My big lesson from my Friday show is–make sure you only have the audio faders up on the sources you’re actually using. I had to reboot everything and I ended up with my studio mic and iPhone mic both live–made for some awesome echo–haha. OBS, tries to grab audio from all sources, by default.

This may interest some of you: Streamlabs OBS just launched on Mac. It’s free and supposedly pretty good.

fantastic!
thank you

if the lines community stream happens, it might could be cool to see if the person organizing could drop a line in the contact form here to see if the Experimental Sound Studio would be interested in sharing the stream https://ess.org/the-quarantine-concerts

To all of you that has expressed interest: Awesome! Let’s try and make this happen. We have enough people to pull of quite a lengthy event already, but there is always room for more(and more disciplines). I might make a separate thread this weekend, but to those that are interested already: what day of the week would you prefer to do this? I’m thinking a Sunday, but I’m open for suggestions. Also, I am very open for a more creative name than “lines community stream”

what equipment is needed for live streaming?

Depends on what you are streaming. But for a live music thingie, I would recommend an audio interface that works nicely with OBS(software), a computer with a webcam or you can use the OBS studio Cam app for and iPhone(I think it’s about 10$, and only works with vanilla OBS, not Streamlabs OBS) and good and stable internet connection

Updated the form with a column for preferred day of the week. Will make a separate thread this weekend.

tonight kelli and i (as softbits) are playing a few songs along with several local musicians, benefiting our rural hospital.

starts at 7pm EST tonight. we play last. youtube link will be posted at:

https://www.bushelcollective.org/events/first-fridays-3/

(advanced apologies for modern compression technology. we’re doing a weird setup where we zoom as a group into a central hub, then our friend mc’s each of us into a youtube stream. holy moly.)

hope you’re all safe and staying sane.
