My nephew says that 1W is probably just fine for a small club or bar. $400ish might be a good price.

This is a photo of 2x2W lasers and 2x3W lasers.

He also says, “the other big spec besides power is scan rate, which is measured in killa-points per second at a certain scan angle. you should look for at least 20kpps at 8 degrees.”

and, “i REALLY prefer units with centered aperture. makes em much easier to line up an mount centered or symetrically.”

I really was gonna keep this low key, really…

If you are talking about integration of DMX with programming environments and please forgive me if this has already been covered but i recommend and have successfully used the ENNTEC dmxusbpro box several times to control all sorts of boards with pd/max and isadora

https://www.enttec.com/us/range/controls/dmx-usb/

as soon as it talks MIDI anything goes IMHO

Yeah, @madeofoak mentioned that up here:

Pretty sweet!

the ENTTEC mk2 i consulted on with the ENTTEC folks and i am glad they deployed all those features so cool and responsive company

Haven’t been in this thread in a bit, but this reminded of this project that @Angela filmed for a couple of years ago. It’s crazy what you do with just light + glass.

Gorgeous.

Now, to make the internal structure of glass objects to be sound reactive…

Just kidding. This falls more into the category of mineral oil/alcohol liquid light shows in my mind. Inspiring of and inspired by the music, but not directly influenced by it. Which is nice because it lets go of the constraint of trying to illustrate what the musician is doing with sound. I can certainly imagine mixing these types of elements with more audio-reactive bits.

One could certainly use something like this to control the rotation of the glass.

http://www.bastl-instruments.com/modular/dc-motor/

That would be quite powerful, especially if it’s tilt and rotation, and maybe control over the actual light (intensity and color).

Controlling all of those aspects would require a couple more Bastl modules (or LZX for the light control, perhaps via DMX), but it’s all certainly possible.

Hi!

I’ve been recently searching for Laser projectors and ILDA laser to use them with my Processing visuals and modular synth in live performances, and I would like to know your experiences. I’ve came across several modules, like the Cyclops and the Laserbox from 1010 music, and I would like to know if you hace experiences using them. Also, what do I need to convert an standard Mac HDMI signal into an ILDA laser device?

Any tips are welcome!!!

Has anyone mentioned this http://www.doepfer.de/a1973.htm so far? I didn’t check.

Back on the simpler side — seems like this could provide some interesting opportunities?

I have the older version but I haven’t tested with lights.

can the dmx heads (@Rodrigo?) recommend some light bar / par can fixtures with good color response? i’m looking to get at least 3 or 4 lights that have a nice amount of subtle color tuning available. i’ve never used dmx stuff before… would like to keep the investment modest - but am willing to pay a little more if it means a wider available color spectrum.

thanks!

@Angela and I have a pair of Chauvet slimPar Pro lamps:
https://www.chauvetdj.com/products/slimpar-pro-rgba/

They are alright. We purposefully bought some ones that were “flicker free” so we can film with them, but these still have banding unfortunately:

We’ve gotten better at mitigating it, but it’s still not completely gone.

The color space is 8-bit (so standard 0-255 for everything), which isn’t super dynamic, but was good enough for what we needed. I have used (on a project with @tremblap a few years ago) ones that had 16-bit color (I think by having two channels per individually addressable channel (ala 14-bit MIDI)).

I’ve thought about buying some better ones now, but I’m really out of the loop on stuff like this, so curious if anyone else has some good lamps to suggest!

My person priority would be on flickering vs color space, particularly if you plan on filming things, but color is obviously a big deal too.

ah. yeah, flicker is something i definitely want to avoid.

Yup, that’s a real kick in the dick.

It has to do with the PWM speed, but I don’t know enough to know how high that number should be so it doesn’t flicker at all. (It’s absolutely the worst when the lights are dimmest)

I’d love to see a demo of that. Couldn’t find one…
