Controlling all of those aspects would require a couple more Bastl modules (or LZX for the light control, perhaps via DMX), but itā€™s all certainly possible.

Hi!

Iā€™ve been recently searching for Laser projectors and ILDA laser to use them with my Processing visuals and modular synth in live performances, and I would like to know your experiences. Iā€™ve came across several modules, like the Cyclops and the Laserbox from 1010 music, and I would like to know if you hace experiences using them. Also, what do I need to convert an standard Mac HDMI signal into an ILDA laser device?

Any tips are welcome!!!

can the dmx heads (@Rodrigo?) recommend some light bar / par can fixtures with good color response? iā€™m looking to get at least 3 or 4 lights that have a nice amount of subtle color tuning available. iā€™ve never used dmx stuff beforeā€¦ would like to keep the investment modest - but am willing to pay a little more if it means a wider available color spectrum.

@Angela and I have a pair of Chauvet slimPar Pro lamps:

They are alright. We purposefully bought some ones that were ā€œflicker freeā€ so we can film with them, but these still have banding unfortunately:

Weā€™ve gotten better at mitigating it, but itā€™s still not completely gone.

The color space is 8-bit (so standard 0-255 for everything), which isnā€™t super dynamic, but was good enough for what we needed. I have used (on a project with @tremblap a few years ago) ones that had 16-bit color (I think by having two channels per individually addressable channel (ala 14-bit MIDI)).

Iā€™ve thought about buying some better ones now, but Iā€™m really out of the loop on stuff like this, so curious if anyone else has some good lamps to suggest!

My person priority would be on flickering vs color space, particularly if you plan on filming things, but color is obviously a big deal too.

Yup, thatā€™s a real kick in the dick.

It has to do with the PWM speed, but I donā€™t know enough to know how high that number should be so it doesnā€™t flicker at all. (Itā€™s absolutely the worst when the lights are dimmest)

Was able to mitigate it with certain settings, but never get rid of it completely. The best we ever got it started introducing motion blur (obviously).

I know there are better par lamps (with much higher PWM rates I suppose) that donā€™t run into most of those issues, though I imagine even with those you have to be mindful of certain settings (like fluorescent bulbs).

Just had a great chat with @instantjuggler (and @Angela) and among other things he mentioned the Astera Helios, which I had never heard of. Sadly their webpage is a bit shit, and the Youtube videos Iā€™ve seen donā€™t go into super detail about the features and how they are implemented, but it seems to tick a lot of the right boxes.

Anyone have any experience with these (or similar)?

yeah iā€™ve used those for a photo shoot. they are great. we didnā€™t do any automation or wireless control with themā€¦ just set to static colors using the onboard menus.

i just found another company offering similar tech:

these arenā€™t cheap options, but they are definitely high quality.

one of the nice things about being in LA is that i can easily rent this gear, so i might just go that route.

Does anyone know if dmxis is able to trigger lights based on audio instead of midi? Ideally would like to have a set up where each light I have would be controlled by different audio tracks in Ableton. All info Iā€™m finding online is how to trigger lights with midi.

If not dmxis, does anyone have any other alternatives that can control lights with audio from Ableton?

I think there are some maxforlive dmx tools. Maybe you can find some audio->midi maxforlive patches (like an envelope follower to midi cc) and build a custom chain/rack?

Is it as simple as using the ableton envelop follower and assigning that to a midi cc knob. I did that for the video synth program lumen and it worked.
