depending on what you’re using, if its eurorack LFO’s work great!

Kinda repetitive. Would be lovely if you could find a way to create a lissajous figure from two voltage sources…

Don’t know if this would help at all.

Well yes, thats what happens when you plug LFO’s into the X/Y input on the cyclops.

That would indeed help!

Still thinking lasers a bit glitzy, but I’ll ponder it.

DMX is great fun!
for our plays we use QLAB and ministage console together which allows for full show control from a single computer (but we usually have lights on one and audio on another)

dimmers can be had for fairly cheap (craigslist is a decent place to find them on sale)
controlling dimmers through midi is pretty easy (some dimmers have MIDI inputs)
then you can plug in whatever bulb you want

this following couple videos are less about the color and more about the lines
the vectrex gaming console can be modified fairly simply to accommodate voltage control

of course you could always go down the LZX/video synth rabbit hole as the audio/video modular stuff works fairly well together but that isn’t what you are necessarily after

That looks way cool. I’ll definitely do a bit of digging into vectrex hacking, looks like fun.

Thanks for the tip on MIDI-controllable dimmers.

No decisions yet, but I’m looking for a nice balance between interesting-for-the-audience and not-too-hard-to-play-or-setup (and not too expensive, is actually kind of a big factor in this)

here was something I did for fun with stuff we had around from doing our shows

shnth + openmusiclabs repatcher (to change what on the shnths max patch was patched to the light) + max/msp => MIDI USB => DMX controller (our dimmers don’t have MIDI just the DMX) => DMX out from controller to dimmer => light plugs into dimmer

the easiest route would be the synesthesia into a DMX dimmer I would imagine

the video says I was using the nanocontrol for something but I don’t remember what it would have been

I love this max patch and want to revisit it as it has a very ciat-lonbarde headspace for deriving control messages from the shnth.

I don’t have any DIY experience but maybe some folks over in the video synth forum on muffs would have an idea (there are a good amount of people who talk about DIY stuff there but it is always over my head)

good luck!

talking about vectrex… our video guy in kvsu now only uses that and a pair of oscilloscope monitors. Sometimes he has them hooked up to his video modular system, but lately he seems to have more fun just using the Axoloti (apparently that’s really great to use in conjunction with the XY-monitors).

An example here:

and here’s one with more modular synth action (with our new project “felt kaan”)

Oh man, that’s gorgeous. I want to know more about how this is done!

I talked to Akira’s Rebirth, and he downloaded some knowledge! I don’t think this really qualifies as “low key” anymore, but I effin’ love it anyway.

So I ended up doing this with PrettyScope tonight.

Synthesis Technology E355 Morphing Dual LFO at audio rates, with LFO2 Function set to Phase. Pitch and Morph CV sequenced by Eloquencer.

looks amazing! i give it two weeks before you’re doing this:

Wow, very impressive. One can only hope!

Now you need to get an actual oscilloscope!

Right? Would be pretty cool. Problem is, scopes are small. How do you make them stageworthy? Point a camera at it?

Starting to think about a Max patch called Lissajous.
http://www.audiobulb.com/create/Lissajous/Lissajous.htm

Max supports Syphon, so it’s conceivable you could be running multiple scopes for multiple tracks, and composite in Resolume or something similar.

Or, you know, lasers.

They are small… but really heavy. It’s incredible how heavy such a small screen can be.
But yeah, the way Akirasrebirth does it on stage is to use a camera&projector. Though you loose a bit of the fine-grained details the oscilloscope/vectrex has. Except if you spend the money for a 4K projector… but I think these are still quite expensive or aren’t they? So I guess using an emulation is probably just as good all things considered.

That’s exactly what I used to do probably 15-20 years ago now during my odd forays into DJing. An ancient vacuum tube oscilloscope with a video camera pointing at it, connected to a projector. It works pretty well although is probably somewhat old school/lo-fi these days given advances in computer based video resources.

I’ve always loved the Floating Points laser show: http://www.hamillindustries.com/floating-points-live-laser-show/

PrettyScope seems incredible, thank you for the heads up @jasonw22! This could be a very lovely performance tool, with all of its automation options.
