And then suddenly after 14 years, this slice of apocalyptic eldritch horror appears, as if by magic:
Saw them post about this. Can’t wait to listen to it
It’s outstandingly good, and takes the Khanate template into some disturbing places.
God, as if the past releases weren’t terrifying enough
and a charming interview with one of the best music publications around
can’t wait to listen. Things Viral was a huge fav back in the 00s
While I’ve consumed a lot of ‘progressive’ music, including modern prog-metal and performed and consumed experimental electronics, that was a challenging listen. Interested in the interview below…
Based on the time periods they mentioned working on this, Plotkin’s generative modular soundscapes were done with a sizable Eurorack setup. I remember seeing him selling a ton of stuff on the FB modular buy/sell/trade groups, and from a quick glimpse of his IG page, he has since added some Serge and Buchla stuff to his studio arsenal. I wonder how much of that will make it onto potential future Khanate recordings.
Wow! So much crunch and feedback. Like a slow and precise version of early Celtic Frost.
I liked that bit talking about free timing, just watched the new Earth documentary and (obviously) parallels.
This is sooooo good. Khanate has always sounded like what I thought metal would sound like before I got into metal: pure misanthropy and extreme discomfort. As much as I love all genres of metal, even the most extreme styles have a formal structure that makes them feel safe after you get used to them. Khanate feels unsafe in the best way. Love it.
I also like the stuff about free timing. Freeness=a dimension of heaviness.
Once I went to a Peter Brötzmann Full Blast trio concert (not this one but it’s a fine example) that floored me much more than seeing other metal concerts. It had that intensity that is overwhelming. When I saw Slayer performing full Reign in Blood they looked like clerks (and they were smashed by Mastdon opening and touring without one of the two guitarists)…I agree with what you wrote about safety.
Khanate is disturbing, and I think it’s the fact that Dubin lets himself loose of expressing some interesting feelings on the mic. Every time I hear the verse I crawl inside the human shield half whispered, I got shivers down my spine. I love the space and the tension that builds in it in this new one. I’ll surely give it more than one spin.
A couple years ago, Maurice/Mories made some transphobic comments on a screenshot of an article about a pregnant trans non-binary person. Between that and the edgelord glorification of serial killers, sexual assault, and related themes in his music, there’s really no reason at all to support him or any of his other projects.
Oh. I wasn’t aware of that at all. That does provide a different context.
I LOVE KHANATE
Also, what’s this about an Earth documentary? Sounds interesting!
ooh i missed that Sigh had a new album last year!?
Just started listening, so far it’s doom with Japanese rap and a choir, naturally
