Erbe-verb doesn’t have a stereo dry path built-in, but it’s otherwise just as stereo as any other reverb you’re going to find in Eurorack, with maybe the exception of the ECR-1. Otherwise, they all sum left and right, and then create a stereo reverb effect from that mono sum.

Correcting myself: a couple of the algorithms on Happy Nerding FX Aid that are based on modeling “real spaces” do process left and right separately.

This may not be useful for you, I know you mentioned getting more stereo modules. I’m writing this in case others are also looking to make their Shared System more stereo and I wanted to say that adding X-Pan alone is also an option.

I’m using that combination now, I was surprised how adding X-Pan affected my workflow and the end result.

I used to put Erbe-Verb as the end chain effect and I wasn’t certain whether I’d like the X-Pan on its own. In the end I enjoy it very much, I especially like to mix and pan multiple mono voices with the stereo reverb.

I’m doing mostly melodic ambient, here’s a random track recorded with this setup, patch notes in the video description.

I know! I was agreeing with you that external may be better for exactly that reason.

I have part of the SS (minus DPO, the effects, tempi, and optomix), 0-coast, Mimeophon, Tehlarmonic. It might be useful to probe a little into what is considered “flat”. In my experience, headphones do give you flatter sound. At other times it’s simply the music - I wouldn’t underestimate the DPO or the Morphagene - both can give you sounds with extreme contrast. One thing I’ve found to be very useful is adding a capable compressor to my setup - magnify sounds or tame them as required. It’s made a dramatic difference to how musical things sound to my ears. It’s also allowed me to push modules into areas where they sound interesting but unhealthy to the ear without dynamic control. I’d say go for some outboard gear. Also if you have another 3U in mind, i’d say maybe a filter, and some VCAs, especially of the overdriving kind. Maybe some gate sequencing. Those should complement your setup, likely give you the contrast you’re after.

New Video premieres at 1 Eastern!

Let’s use some simple control voltage shapes to inscribe rhythm and intelligibility on unrelated sounds with the Tape & Microsound Music Machine.

This one is less on the “design, usability” and much more on the “theory, philosophy” side - hope you’ll check it out :zap:

Hey Walker, can you hook me up with your shrooms guy?

Make Noise just announced on Instagram that the Contour has been retired and the last batch is headed to shops.

I hope that means we’ll eventually see some creative new modulation sources from them!

Doepfer’s still making the A-171-2, which is almost exactly the same module.

I think you’re thinking of Function. Contour is an ARSR envelope similar to Moog contour envelopes.

Yeah, I’m an idiot tonight. Never mind.

Interesting that neither the Contour nor the Dynamix made it very long. I have to imagine it was due to low sales rather than them having something else in the hopper.

I just received a Dynamix and really enjoy its snappy character, I think it’s a great module.

I’m sure slow sales were a factor, particularly for Dynamix. The obvious problem with both Contour and Dynamix is they weren’t all that well-differentiated from Maths/Function or Optomix/LxD, respectively.

With Dynamix and Contour both retired now, I’m abandoning any hope for a module based around the 0-Coast’s Overtone and Multiply circuits.

Has anyone tried powering the 0-Coast off of something like a Cioks DC7, which has 15V outlets? The official power supply is spec’d at 560mA and with a current doubler cable/two outlets I could give it 800mA.

I want to add an 0-ctrl but I am out of power outlets and I absolutely hate how the power jack sticks out of the side and unnecessarily eats up space. And it would be really nice to power my pedals and these guys all from one box instead of adding yet another power strip.

I asked Makenoise and they said they do not recommend using anything but the official power supply. But there’s been the winking “it will void your warranty but you can power it from Euro given a robust enough PS to handle the startup draw” acknowledgement on forums, so I don’t know why this wouldn’t work too unless I’m missing something.

RE Contour and Dynamix being discontinued -sequencing with gates have never seemed a big part of the Make Noise ecosystem, which prioritises triggers for striking/clocking/triggering, so perhaps this symbolises the move away from the approach of ‘modules that fill the gaps in Eurorack’ like it was back in 2008, and more toward a Buchlarian-style whole system philosophy.

I know in the Podular Modcast interview Tony was expecting to see the 0-Coast sitting on top of things like a Nord Lead, but it actually saw more use through experimental self-patching rather than performance using an organ-style keyboard.

If the power supply has the correct voltage, enough current, the right connector and polarity, it should work in any case. I’ve got a box full of power supplies I’ve collected over the years and I just go in there and find what I need when I’m trying to power up whatever I’m using, be it an old 4-track, pedal, etc.

recommend

I’ll give you two of the many factors at play: 1/ the ability for the PSU to handle power draw above or near the stated current - many PSUs out there can’t do that, I have bought in the past a case with underspecced power supply that, with two very popular modules together, was always hit & miss on startup. 2/ noise: PSU and consumers form a circuit that has its own characteristics, including resonance. It is entirely possible for one module to disturb another, or for a single module to make your case noisier just because of its power draw variance.

When designing a unit to run on its own supply, you might choose to have some assumptions in place and not overspec its power supply section — to not cause or filter interference. I power my 0-coast from the other end of a Row Power 15V. Wouldn’t recommend it simply because I couldn’t possibly know what else you would use that same power brick for.

Trying to think of what the most likely next MN module would be… most likely something a bit unexpected, with a foot in the history of electronic music and a foot in the present of DSP, something that may replace and element in the SS, and the kind of thing that would interest both Tony and Tom.

Only thing I can think of it a sort of gestural multichannel CV recorder in the spirit of ‘ghost tracks’ that they would use for recording CV to tape at the San Francisco Tape Music Centre, combined with an envelope follower and pitch tracker that would also allow non-modular signals (voice, violin, radio static!) to be incorporated alongside recording of CV and gate signals. With some added voltage control of states for switching channels, direction, playback speed etc.

One can only dream
