@Molotov Your “seaside drive” vid really hooked me at that time and got me into this system. It was called “48 mins of live ambient drone” or something like that. After watching it several times I decided to buy a Shared System. Still one of my favorite instrument to this day.

ah that’s cool, thanks! I still make that beach trip now and again, although my son is much bigger now
That was recorded when Morphagene first got released if I remember (replacing the Phonogene), I still swap them out now and again…

really enjoying jamming the shared system, with norns (mlre) as looper (synced with crow)

Is crow in your SS?

Where’s the clock coming from?

Thanks!

clock from norns + crow is nesting in the SS for a bit

the repeating (echoing?) high notes are giving me some nostalgic vibes - really nice sounds!

Blast from the past! Love how those old tv motifs stay forever lodged somewhere deep in memory.
I wonder if my kids will have the same audio flashbacks from the things they watch now…

Not sure if this is accurate. Tony said in the video that there’s no point for a Share System v2, not that the current Share system will retire. But maybe I missed something?

The video info states that it’s the last batch being produced

I suspect that once the last batch of the B&G Shared System Plus ships, at least one of the modules in it will also wind up discontinued.

Part 1 of the Q&A was great. I’m looking forward to Part 2.

Really enjoyed the video too.

I think you’re right about the possibility of modules being discontinued. I suspect the Erbe-Verb and Ecophon are on the way out. Mimeophon seems a functional replacement for the latter, while enthusiasts have been begging for a stereo Erbe-Verb for years. It would make sense given Make Noise has invested substantially in building a stereo ecosystem in recent years.

I doubt MN will ever make “a stereo Erbe-Verb”. What might happen is that Tom Erbe will identify something new in the domain of parametric reverb to explore, and the results might be a new reverb product, and that product might have a stereo dry path. But this is all conjecture. The fundamental DSP architecture of Spectraphon has been described as a “platform”, so it’s not unreasonable to expect new products built upon it.

I also wonder if discontinuation of the Shared System means subsequent production of classic modules like DPO, Maths, Optomix, etc. will be black and gold rather than silver. Was fascinating to hear that was Tony’s initial intent for the early designs.

I have been really loving the classic MN modules. Patching up Mysteron with Erbe Verb and Phonogene is a lot of fun. Plus the sound has tons of character that I find appealing. I also continually find ways to use Echophon on patches with the gritty pitch shifting. Tony and crew are on some special sauce.

I really hope so. It’s not fair to those who could never afford to buy the whole system in one go.

I wonder whether DPO and Optomix are going to be discontinued because of the vactrol situation in the EU diminishing sales. It’s only a matter of time till the Echophon becomes unfeasible to continue production of due to its older DSP.

My prediction is that there won’t be a flagship system, but rather a selection of a few modules and provision for a case, with focus on producing single modules much like other manufacturers. As Tony says in the video, original Make Noise’s line-up was filling in some of the gaps in the Doepfer system alongside Harvestman, TipTop etc. Now its not a Doepfer system that’s the standard, but a mix of lots of makers, and I can see how it makes sense to put in the R&D on a small selection of module that add to the current market, leaving more R&D time/investment in more accessible products like the CTRL series.

I remember when the 0-CTRL was first released Tony had said they were getting interest from people new to modular at trade shows whose faces dropped when they found out the price. Given the success of this line of products and their amazingly informative and helpful approach to videos/social media, alongside the economics of scale producing more affordable instruments, it makes sense that they might steer away from a flagship product like the Shared System.

On the other hand, I’d love it if they were to really push the Select Bus and make a new stereo system with state recall across the whole instrument!

I’ll miss the rubbery fuzz of the DPO if the MN focus shifts. It’s become such a comforting presence for me, and I don’t even own the module. I love when I hear it and I love listening for it on recordings.

MN may not offer a “flagship system” on the order of the B&G Shared System Plus, but I’d be rather surprised if they stopped offering prepackaged systems. Tony’s design approach is holistic. The Tape & Microsound Music Machine seems to have done well. The System Cartesian didn’t last so long, but with it gone and the Shared System about to fade out, there will be an obvious hole that could be filled. The recent focus on stereo modules presents a potential opportunity—and we’ve already seen some interesting stereo-oriented modular mixtures in Walker’s videos. The key question is perhaps not whether MN could offer a prepackaged system, but whether Tony sees a particular combination of modules that he feels provides a compelling set of capabilities and limitations. That combination of modules may not exist in today’s lineup, but 2024 is around the corner.
