You can also manually step through your sequence when unclocked by going to the fun page and tapping the clock parameter manually. Only works for one channel at a time, but I use it to create loops with magneto and W/.

Been hoping for that firmware update since Rene mk2 came out.

Instead of acting as toggles on the latch page they should be momentary. By pressing the “left” arrow the pressed locations would latch… that’s how I’d like it.

Agreed! Hopefully in an update. Anyone with the mana to put such a thought across?

A good chunk of those “Rene 10x” video examples will work with R2. However, you are correct - my personal faves MPC Mode and Touch Sequence mode are not exactly possible anymore. Touch Sequence mode still is kinda a thing, but R2 is essentially always in LATCH operation, so you touch the stages to turn them on, and touch them again to turn them off.

@DegradedEcho - I’ve adjusted to how Touch Sequence works on R2. When I would perform with Touch Sequence I almost always latched at some point, so now I try and exploit the latching behavior more often. Slowly building/tearing down more elaborate sequences (more steps than I could realistically hold and latch on R1). It’s good, just in a different way. Bummer you sold the OG though as it still has a special place. I’ve seen so many on Reverb for cheap I debated picking up a 2nd but opted to scouring for a TSNM instead.

I’m pondering a trade for Rene v1 and I’ve purposely avoided comparisons to the newer model.

Do some folks still favor the original Rene?

I will have to make the same adjustment. It is a nice feature actually, having a latch mode rather than needing to actively latch the sequence. As you say, building/tearing down sequences in a gestural, performative way. But it would be so great if you could just switch latching off!
Regarding the upgrade, I am still pleased. I look forward to exploring it’s tesseract nature. The original is an undeniable bargain at the new price, a beautiful classic. I think the single channel and cartesian/logic focus is a more pure execution of the concept, but the successor is a more capable control surface for an entire system. One of each would not be overkill.

I have had both for awhile and feel that they have very different strengths. My favorite behavior on the orig that I’m unable to fully replicate on the new one: Using a variable shape unipolar lfo to address cartesian location - this can create super fast trigger bursts that are awesome going into a lowpass gate or pinging a filter. The pattern of bursts is playable by changing the lfo shape, attenuating the lfo on the input, or disabling gates or access locations. I tried this on the new rene and it seems to skip triggers on faster speeds, does not feel as zippy for lack of a better term

I have this problem! Did you ever solve it?

Such high hopes for a momentary option on the latch page! It’s such a beautiful implementation of the grid of stored voltages. I used to love using my left hand to ‘fret’ notes and my right to gate, bow and modulate using PP. I love the updates on V2 but surely this can be reinstated in an update!

Definitely would be cool to have an option for this, similar to new options on morphagene for example

Do we have a fellow on speaking terms with Make Noise who might be able to push this through?

perhaps our good friend @walker is watching

I can’t remember where I saw it but I think they have stated a few times that the new touchplate technology cannot register sustained touch so it would not be possible on the Rene 2 hardware with any firmware update, it can only toggle on/off

That’s a damn shame. I’d love to see where you read that. Now to squeeze in an original next to the successor…

When you latch two channels at the same time it releases latching on previous channel when you hold fingers on second latch page. So somehow it can be used to detect sustained touch.
Software for Rene 2 seems really strange to me, especially the 9 seconds locking save. Shame it’s not open source since hardware is most beautiful.

Yes it is a hardware limitation. It can register extended touch, but not for very long (it times out). In the end momentary touch works great for a single-channel device but on this René you need to be able to latch across channels, so toggling makes more sense.

Thank you for pointing this out Walker. It’s a pity that it won’t be possible but glad I know I can stop waiting for a firmware update and embrace the potential of both Rene1 and Rene2.

Indeed, thanks for the final word Walker. The old and the new look rather indulgent next to each other on MG, but I expect the reality of the pair to be beautiful.

When I tune my oscillators with a H9 built in tuner to C and then plug in v/Oct from René the tuner goes +25 higher. Am I doing something wrong or there is something with my René?
