There may be a bit of a misunderstanding here. The physical USB port doesn’t matter. The slots listed in the devices menu are virtual and not tied to a physical port.

you should be able to plug Arc into any of the physical ports, and select it in slot 1 in the devices/arc menu. the only time that i have had troubles is when the same arc (or grid) was listed in two device slots. (the solution in this case was to remove all but the arc/grid in slot one in the devices menu.)

update v1.4

  • tracks have been increased to 7
  • grid support (via @artfwo’s wonderful glut script)
  • navigating between tracks has moved from key3 to enc3
  • key3 now sets the selected track speed to 0

Nice! Can you point me towards more info about the grid integration?

k3 sets speed to 0 , bug or intentional? thanks for the new update, great stuff!

I will be updating the docs with a grid control image soon! Until then…

row 1 is track stops (buttons 1-7), pattern record buttons (buttons 9-15), and alt (button 16).
row 2 - 8 represent track buffers, row 2 is track 1etc… pressing a button in a row will jump to that position in the buffer.

recording patterns

pressing a pattern record button arms recording.
play a pattern on the track buffers portion of the grid.
press pattern record again to stop recording and begin playback of the pattern.
hold alt and press a pattern record button to clear pattern.

edit:
@swhic That is intentional, but I forgot about it

Very Cool! Thank you!

I just updated the top post with a hastily done grid drawing :sweat_smile::sweat_smile:

Sooooooooo stokes for this one. Too much cool sh*t going in here. Between your stuff, @scanner_darkly Orca’s Heart, and crow and and and, I’m paralyzed with options…good problem to have though. :man_shrugging:t3::pray:t2:

Cannot seem to load samples from the params page after updating mangl and the latest norns release.

Actually, I think it might be a norns update issue.

I just noticed this as well! I also think it’s a norns update issue.

edit: this was a norns update issue, and has been solved.

Hey - the new update is awesome! I’ve been wanting to see what Grid support looks like with this script for a long time.

I did notice a potential bug: Sometimes if I have more than one track going and I press mute on the grid for one of them, it will mute another track a few behind the one I just selected. For example, if I press the mute button for track 4, track 2 will also turn off. It doesn’t always appear to be consistent either (sometimes muting track 6 will also mute 7, or track 5 will also mute track 2, etc.).

Is this a bug, or am I missing a piece of functionality? Thanks again!

EDIT: I think I figured out what is going on. It appears that any mute button will mute whatever track is displayed on the norns while also muting the track that the button represents. So if the Norns has track 4 displayed, and I press the mute track 2 button, then both 2 and 4 will be muted.

Definitely a bug. Good catch! I’ll get a fix together later today.

Bug squashed, and pushed to github. Update away!

So awesome. This is, by far, my favorite script on Norns. Today, I give thanks for grid control.

Thanks for all your work on this, @Justmat!

by all that is un-holy!

yet again…another AMAZING update!!!

i am having to completely learn how to drive this thing again!
:stuck_out_tongue:

so i am currently have a GRID, an ARC and a 16n connected and it’s running really flawlessly!

16n is controlling Volume and Att/Dec.
two faders per voice.

question…
is there a way to add functionality to the that top first row of 7 on the GRID?

the only way to jump to a sample slot is with the encoder or if you mute and then activate it’s row again on the GRID.

would it be possible to jump to a sample slot if you hold one of the mute buttons?
muting would still be a short press.

using Encoder 3 is a bit tricky.
i seem to always rush by sample 2 and have to try to get back to it.
maybe if there is a way to put a bigger range on the Encoder 3 so it takes more of a turn to get to the next sample slot?
(if that makes sense)

and sorry for the dumb question…what exactly do the Pattern Record Slots do?
i tried testing them out and i didn’t hear anything.

thanks for making this even more incredible!

oh yeah…by the way…FYI
i loaded an old saved project and it loaded it up perfectly and got to work.
i just had to add three more samples!

and then this happened…

this makes sense and is doable since the last norns update  I will look into making the change today. I’ll also look into making the mutes work as track select, if the track is already muted/deactivated.

they record a pattern of movement. a quick example use would be…

  • load a sample on track 1
  • make sure the track is active, and speed is set to 0
  • press the first pattern record button (grid key 9 on row 1)
  • press a few different grid keys in row 2 to move around the buffer
  • press the first pattern record button again.

you should see and hear your pattern of grid presses played back to you.

nb: you don’t have to contain a pattern to one track. each pattern slot can have movement/pattern data from any/all of the tracks

to clear the pattern, hold alt and press the pattern record slot.

edit: @SPIKE et al. here’s a quick example of using the pattern recorders

update v1.6

  • norns: enc3 sensitivity has been adjusted. much easier to accurately select a track.
  • grid: the first 7 grid buttons in row 1 are now track select buttons.
  • grid: alt + track select retains the old track stop/deactivate behavior.

What an immidate and fun app!! Amazing job.
Some info:
-if you load a file with a long name it writes over the text that’s there. No biggie, just thought I’d mention.
-I’d love the ability to start/stop the track from the grid. Alt+1-7 could be assigned to that?

Keep it up!!!

Edit: it looks like you implemented that exact thing. I never tried it hah

gave it a spin tonight…awesome evolution. now with pattern record and grid implementation it feels to me like a flexible granular offshoot of MLR. Kudos…
