The compressor is always active on the MIX jack in sound mode, regardless of how you’re interacting.
If you have only 1 voice playing at VTR=5 then it should be totally clean, but if you have multiple voices simultaneously, the compressor will start to kick in. I think the compressor threshold is about 6V, but quickly ramps up to limiting at 8V (the limit of the hardware output). It’s aggressive! So if you want to play polyphonically, you want to set the VTR level such that you’re mixed output is around +/-5V to keep a clean tone. Obviously that number will depend on number of simultaneous notes & length of decay tails.
