Perhaps the Erogenous Tones Levit8 would be an excellent partner to JF… That way you could create various mixes from all six JF outputs and even include the mix out

My preorder hasn’t shipped yet but reading through the technical map this week got me all riled up.

Anyone using theirs with CV manglers, such as NLC’s Let’s Splosh or GENiE?

Thanks for getting back to me! Broadly speaking: I have tried all of this over the past year (after discovering my love of the mix output). The issue, invariably, is that phasing matter, which is very difficult to describe in text and which I’m not sure I’ve adequately conveyed here. To give it a slightly more focused go (although my mathspeak is a little rusty…):

I’m looking for some f(x) such that the same x value will not always return the same output, call it f(x, y) BUT also such that the y value as deployed within the function does not radically alter the “character” of the function relative to x taken in isolation. . . that is, ANDing N5 + N6 results in whatever modulation is performed by the result overtaking the subtle modulation of identity through N4 being low in the mix output (you will hear, primarily, whatever AND is modulating, rather than those more subtle MIX movements). Combining the mix output with other signals (through a VCA, logic, or as a modulator) tends to diminish its very special, undulating character (shape + curve ~2 o’clock, although I do tweak these).

This hurtle is of a similar form to using the modulation outputs individually without FM or modulation of intone (since they will always be in phase when used this way, and so give clean divisions of Identity, rather than non-repeating pseudo-random patterns).

Trying to duplicate the ~character~ without the results being strictly deterministic with respect to the ~values~, and without the ~character~ being overcome by the character of some external modulator (such as Maths, modulation from TT, etc…).

This may not actually be a mathematically feasible thing, but I can’t shake the feeling that I’m somehow missing something. that would permit me a larger number of similarly “layered” or “unfolding” modulation sources.

Sorry for being unclear – maybe to illustrate the idea um… Patch mix to a timbrel parameter and identity to a VCA. See how now you only hear Identity modulation of the source (since the sound source is silenced the rest of the time). Similarly, any use of the JF outputs will overlap deterministically (although in more subtle ways). Think about a drone. You want all possible combinations of values for 0 < x < 1 and 0 < y < 1. If using the JF mix output and any control source derived from JFs other outputs, you will not get every possible combination of values because there will always be points at which that value X and Y will always alight on the same value at the same time (or be shifting in the same direction at related rates, cyclically).

Ok… that’s like four different ways of phrasing the impasse that may help inform a solution (or just confuse the hell out of everyone…).

I have to say I don’t think I fully understand but it’s an interesting brain tickle to try to figure out…

if you’re modulating intone… wont they never be in phase as you are constantly shifting the relationship? I have found that even at the extreme settings (CCW or CW which are meant to be clean divisions or multiplications) they do not stay in phase for very long unless the envelopes are quite short… I use it this way as a sort of drifting clock divider at times, in fact I don’t think I’ve found a consistent way to get them to remain in phase without retriggering them every few “bars”.

aside from mixing LFOs (which you could do with maths, or using attenuators and logic with JFs individual outs) it seems like LFOs with FM inputs would also give you something with similar character. This noise reap module seems like it might provide something similar in spirit — a wobbly semi repetitious but emergent modulation… with that in mind actually Sloths (very slow) or other (faster) chaos modules, for example from NLC, often have this type of behavior on their own, with FM possibilities. EDIT: or throwing 4 of JFs outs into Let’s Splosh and getting 16 related outputs :eyes: as @license suggested above

Apologies if I’m still misunderstanding what you’re after…

@renegog

and, beside the point, this was to draw analogy to the nature of related LFOs to try to illustrate this more nuanced point about related modulation.

no need to be sorry. I’ve felt for a while now that my questions have surpassed my own ability to phrase them, and am not handling it well.

my ability to answer has clearly surpassed my ability to read :weary: the question is, have I had too much coffee or not enough… (apologies again)

EDIT: OK now that I read better: you’re wanting clean divisions of identity. I think maybe you could employ a sequential switch and self-modulate JF’s shaping with one of its own outputs, selected by switch. This way will give you several different flavors while still being intoned to identity.

EDITEDIT: If you have Teletype, you could also retune INTONE to new ratios with JF.TUNE X Y Z

Oooooooooooooof I’ma let this one die. I just do not have precise enough vocabulary to explore this productively.

Thank y’all for giving it a shot

Super nice. Great case too, is it DIY?

Wish it was DIY! But I’m not skilled at all with woodworking…

This case was build by a guy in the UK who’s Etsy and Instagram account names are SawandSolder

Hey All. Is there any way to get a little more juice out of the individual outs on JF when running kria over the ii bus? The output always seems really quiet to me. Did a little bit of digging, and saw that (at one point) this was intentional to avoid clipping the mix output. Is that still the case?

Yeah the duration param is mapped to velocity range V 2 - V 5, which is pretty low.

My hero! Maxing that out on the grid bumped the volume up immediately. Or at least I think it did! Thanks!

Two related questions:

  1. It seems to me that the sound is not only getting louder but also brighter (would make sense with an emulated lpg), correct?

  2. Is the expected max 10V (I’m in just type)…

NB: Only on second patch with JF, totally love it!

Yes :grey_exclamation:

I’m so pumped for mine to arrive from Control! Just cleared out some space in my rack. Woot!

This is lovely and so is that case.

Thank you! I think I need a larger one…!

still exploring, this is just my second patch with jf, but getting more acquainted w the shape of things. ive dreamed of having jf as the heart of my system since i got into modular last summer (i wish i knew abt these forums back then…) so its kinda surreal to me to finally be using it in that way. this is the first time ive felt my system is “complete”

in shape/cycle & im basically using it exactly how id use my trip sloths. the aim was getting a feel for how i could time modulation events using intone… so instead of that chaos driven generative vibe id normally get from sloths it comes out to be more of a phase varied loop. will be exploring using triggers more in the next patch and also exploring some of its control rate self patching possibilities. after that will be looking to explore it more as a tool for sound design… those oscillator vids yall post sound so sweet (:

also thanks all who have contributed to this thread and for all who have created learning resources for this module!!! feeling v thankful to have such a strong foundation to work from.
