@dansimco, @cosmicsoundexplorer: @n-So’s instagram post above is the new Tides (modulation) with a JF (sound), if you missed that.

thanks for the insightful reply, and i appreciate the points you make. i apologise if the tone of my reply was slightly shirty. and agreed, no wish to derail the thread.

@xenus_dad

excellent point, makes much more sense…

i decided to go for another JF anyway. i’ll let you know how they get on. thanks all for the input

Had a lot of fun last night using Shape + Cycle for pitch CV duties. Slow clock into trigger 6, mix out into Cold Mac’s half-rectify, then into my Teletype quantizer script (a WIP called “Caramel Egg”… rhymes with Harmonaig  ).

The mix output scales down the CV of each channel progressively more, so changing intone had subtle effects on the arpeggio. Waveshaping controls for more obvious changes in arp behavior. Half-rectify let me set the floor of the CV to root and let the arpeggio peek above this floor by varying the survey knob. Varying the sample rate of my quantizer to different clock divisions, independent of the rate I struck my LPG, created interesting ghost note patterns.

Next steps: Adding transpose and slew controls in my quantizer. Then I need to figure out how to fix the interval generator so Caramel Egg can live up to its namesake and generate 4-voice chords!

Audio demos to come…

Quantizing JF. The second half of the track is made with Caramel Egg v0.5 which adds transpose input, octave switch, and a separate output for bass note. I’m going to add slew control then gig with it on Tuesday :egg::rabbit:

I’m trying to connect my Just Friends to my Teletype using i2c and I’m wondering if I really need to connect all 6 pins between the modules as I only needed 3 for my Txo and Txi.

I really hate that part of Eurorack (messing around with power connectors and tiny cables) so I’m trying to do it right the first time so that I don’t have to open the case again .

3 is sufficient, just make sure to connect SDA to SDA, SCL to SCL and GND to GND

There’s a thing I made happen few times by patching up jf and then shifting through the modes that I would describe as ‘like falling rocks’ or maybe ‘dull kicks’ that opened up my mind to one of the many uses of jf beyond an lfo bank/toy piano – a rhythmic inharmonic sound generator akin to what one might get by hpf’ing, reversing, and adding stutter to a drum part (at least that’s how I’ve achieved this type of sound in the past).

Any idea how one might -deliberately- unlock this potential for the module? Can’t remember how I did it and have no sound examples…

Will work on this puzzle tonight.

Edit: 420th post on the jf thread (also its list price, also…) – that’s kinda cool.

Did you 420 yourself in recognition of the synchronicity?

I was actually playing with some sounds like this earlier today: Sound/Sustain with Time full CCW (or close to it), FM’d by an audio rate signal with the FM depth set relatively deep. Rhythmic triggers to various inputs. Different results in run and non-run modes.

don’t worry, I’m “Just High”

I was able to get some really beautiful/discordant string like sounds out of my JF with some self patching and fm from Mangroves. This module is really inspiring in all its modes

Complex sounds produced by just friends all by itself by feed backing with two of the outputs in synth mode.

I’m sorry if this is a dumb question, or if I missed something, but how do you determine which Run mode you’re in, and how do you alternate between modes?

This thing (JF) is an absolute joy to use, after wrestling with Pam’s NW for the last several weeks. It’s really fun to work with (very direct and responive), though I don’t really understand it yet.

The run mode is determined by the settings of the switches on the front panel! (and of course you enter it usually by plugging something into the jack)

Oh, duh! It’s obvious now, looking again at the second page of the manual.

(thank you)

I’m thinking Triatt (bipolar setting, unpatched) might make a good modulation (test) tool for the RUN jack. I’ve been using a dummy cable for the RUN input, though there is a sticker (red high heel) on the side of the module, so it should be good to go. Thank you for the suggestion!

I most often plug an output from Shades into the run jack, which is basically the same thing :+1:
