I think if we sent @csboling two units he could make it happen. Sorry to volunteer you for the job, but you’ve been killing the firmware hacking game around here

My fav too ! I’m selling my Stages to take another JF. One for sounds and the second for modulations ( or both for sounds )

I believe this is out of my hands since I don’t think you can reconfigure the I2C address used by Just Friends. I could be mistaken. One idea I’ve fantasized about is some sort of I2C bus discovery capability for Teletype, where the leader device would assign a listening address to each follower, then send all commands to the broadcast address and followers would respond if the message contains their assigned address. Not sure if that’s making sense, this would also require some firmware changes from WR/OD to make multiple JFs/301s a possibility.

@Galapagoose @voidstar how about an alternate JF firmware where the I2C address is different? It seems like the time is ripe. I know for certain you’d sell at least one more JF (to me) if that helps you determine the ROI of this effort

@csboling as for 301, you can already address a huge quantity of them! There’s a menu on the 301 to select a different address, and the SC OPs just start counting from a higher number for each subsequent address.

Please let me know how you like JF in place of stages! Has anyone else swapped their Stages for JF here? Currently planning to grab one but could see where two would be useful if I love the sound mode a lot.

Hi Everyone! Long time reader, first time poster.

How are people using Just Friend’s Sound/Sustain and Sound/Transient modes in the wild? I’m fairly new to modular, and this module in particular and am trying to get a handle on its various modes. I’m feeling pretty good with the module except that these two modes give me a bit of a “I just don’t know what to do with these” feeling. I’d love to hear some ideas or see some patch examples of how others are using them. Thanks!

Just checking: Have you seen the technical maps?

For some reason, I could only find a topic with Three Sisters in the title, but there’s documentation for many Mannequins modules inside.

That gives some great insight about how to use JF. That’s not to say I wouldn’t love some discussion about how to use those modes, though! Just pointing you to one resource.

I have, thanks! I’m pretty good about reading module documentation, but could probably afford to spend a little more time with the new technical maps.

I haven’t used Sound/Transient and Sound/Sustain too much but there’s one patch that I’ve played around with a couple times:

  • JF in Sound/Transient mode
  • plug some LFO into Cold Mac’s Survey input
  • plug 6 (or any other number) of CM’s outputs into JF’s trigger inputs
  • use JF’s outputs to ping filters, LPGs etc.
  • change the rhythmic patterns by turning CM’s Survey knob, or modulating the input LFO, CM or JF

Also works nice with JF in Sound/Cycle mode.

Thanks! I have a Cold Mac and am excited to try this out!

Ive just bought a used JF without realising there are different versions, haven’t received it yet but im worried it’s not the new one. The seller said it has the silver panel on the back, does this mean it won’t have the extra functions like Volley, Spill etc?

Silver clouds does indeed mean this is a v1 Just Friends. Per Whimsical’s help page on the RUN jack issue:

NB! This only affects the first edition of modules. Look at the rear pcb-landscape on the module. If the clouds are gold, read no further, everything is cool! If they’re silver, look on the RUN jack side of the module - if you see a little emoji sticker on the jack, it’s been upgraded already, so again - no need to read on!

If you find that your JF doesn’t seem to have the RUN jack fix, get in touch with Whimsical directly – they’re great people!

RUN modes like Volley and Spill are not version-specific. They’ve been available since v1, but subsequent firmware updates have enhanced them.

Thankyou Olivier for your very fast & helpful reply to my first ever post on here

No problem, and welcome! Enjoy your JF

Yeah, I’ve never had a problem with my v1 JF - isn’t the solution just plugging something into the RUN jack before you plug in the other end?

Exactly what I do. I couldn’t be bothered to send it in for an adjustment when I can just patch run first.

Not necessarily the solution for everyone, but I never found it terribly difficult to remember.

Just got my Just Friends in the mail a couple days ago and I think I’m in love. I can definitely see how many of you want/have 2 of them in one case. I can absolutely see myself wanting one for sound mode and another for modulation.

I think at my racks current stage, I’ve grown to really love it as my main (and at the moment really the only) modulation source and being able to patch up a bunch of outs on to different parts of a patch and then playing the Intone and Time knobs has become an addiction for me. Like a really fun macro control for completely changing the patch entirely.

I don’t TOTALLY know what’s going on most of the time so far, but am I having fun doing it hahaha

Does anybody have patch examples of two Just Friends? Ideally sounds or video
